CZ 550 into 460 weatherby etc. ??
      #25816 - 07/02/05 01:19 PM

Has anyone had any experience with rebarreling a CZ 550 into a 416 weatherby, or 460 weatherby etc??
if so will it work ok and approximately how much is it to have it done??

I do belive that a rechamber to 416 weatherby would work as they are basically the same case with the exception of the belt and shoulder. As for the the 460 I will defer to those who know more than I.

As nicely as I can ask this: why?!

bonanza,
The weatherby's that I have seen are about $2000 give or take a few dollars. The CZ's are $625.Thought I could just buy a CZ and rechamnber or rebarrel it. I want one mostly for fun and if I were going to spend the money to buy a weatherby I would probably buy a dakota or have a custom gun made or something like that..

Have you ever shot one? With that rifle it would generate over 100 ft/lbs of recoil. But, to each is own

One thing you would need to check, which would be easy for a gunsmith to fix, is the rim thickness of the 416 Rigby Vs the 460 Wby and also the extractor groove diameter.

I have a suspician that the Wby has a thicker case rim than the Rigby in which case the extractor would need to be thinned a little bit.

If the Wby extractor groove is deeper than the Rigby then you might need to get another extractor from say a 375 or 458 because if the Wby extractor groove is too deep then the cartridges will fall out if you pull the bolt back slowly.

There is one chap on AccurateReloading who posts as RIP and he has a CZ that was 375 H&H and has been rechambered to 378 Wby and as far as I am aware it is a fully fuctional rifle.

Another option that you might consider is 450 Rigby if you are only going to shoot reloads. The 450 Rigby is basically a 416 Rigby Improved necked up to 45. Brass and ammo for the 450 is bad news. To make them from 416 Rigby you only need to expand the 416 to 475 or 50 and then run them through a 450 Rigby die to give you a little shoulder and then off you go. There is a fellow on AR who posts as OldSarge and he has a 458 CZ (or BRNO) that has been rechambered to 450 Rigby and had quite a few things done to it and he wants to sell it.

Apart from the simple conversion there is one other reason to consider the 450 over the 460 Wby. The 460 has huge freebore, I mean huge freebore, the rifling starts about .8" from the case mouth. If the gunsmith has a reamer that is not full on specification then the freebore diameter might be cut too large in diameter and you will pull your hair out trying to make it shoot. If it is done right then 460s seem to be about the most accurate big bore of all.

One other disdvantage of the huge freebore and this applies even if it is done at the right dimensions. If you want to play around with a lot of reduced loads, especially loads that are under the 458, say loads that might equal top 45/70 loads, then the 460s big case capacity and huge free bore can and does cause hangfires and especially with lighter bullets.

Although in America you have a powder which I think is called something like Accurate Arms 5744??? which is a reduced load powder and is basically 4227 burn rate but is big and bulky and easy to ignite liike a shotgun powder. That might allow loads in a 460 with lighter bullets at top 45/70 loadings without hangfires.

The 416 Wby is different as it does not have the very long freebore of the 378 or 460.

Have fun.

Mike

Actually no I haven't ever shot one. I do shoot 3 1/2 inch turkey loads and they dont bother me kinda fun to shoot I think. A 460 is more im sure of it but it will have open sights and I won't be shooting it off of a bench

Ok, sorry, but just have to ask....You think that a 3 1/2 inch turkey load (in a 12 gauge I'll assume) is a good way to get used to recoil by the likes of a .460 weatherby?

Isn't the .460 Weatherby now the second most powerful COMMON sporting cartridge behind the .700????

I shot a 460 Weatherby--------- ONCE! I'm not recoil sensitive, but the 460 was not at all pleasant. I shot it from a sitting position, and it rolled me over onto my back. By the way, I'm 6'3" and weight 270 pounds.

BigFive on these forums has a .460 Weatherby built on a CZ action. Not sure which model CZ. I believe it was a .458 Win Mag before its reincarnation. Next time I visit I will pester him to bring it on safari so we can film HIM shooting it.

Do a search and you may find references to it.

I have decided to forget the whole converting a CZ into a 416 or 460 Weatherby, I will just wait and buy an actually weatherby one of these days.

But I have narrowed down to three calibers, 375 H&H, 416 Rigby or Rem, or 458 Lott in a CZ or Model 70

My .460 is on a Brno 602 action that was originally a .375H&H. It has a Douglas barrel and is topped with a 1.5-5 Leupold. I don't recall what modifications the smith performed to the action for the larger cartridge as the rifle was built for me in the late 80's. I load 112gr of H-4350 for 2360fps with a 500gr Hornady soft. The rifle goes 10 lb empty and is a pussy cat to shoot. I have never shot any factory loads so cannot comment on potential recoil.
