Best elephant hunting left in Africa?
      #257711 - 11/12/14 12:48 AM

I'm finally at a point where I can afford an elephant trip and I feel like I'm to late to the party. I have a trip booked for Mozambique in 2015 with Zambezi Delta Safari and they told me that the elephant poaching is so bad just outside their area that they will probably cancel all 2016 hunts and they are not optimistic for the 2015 season.

For 2016 I'm going to commit to a spare no expense top of the line elephant hunt. The question is .... where and with who?

I'm leaning to the Caprivi Strip and Tanzania but realistically I'm clueless.

Any thoughts?

www.richardcookesafaris.com .Richard hunts Zim and Mozambique and you book with him and hunt with him. I hunted buffalo with him and I know he does a lot of elephant hunting. Great guy with access to some good elephant areas.

Unless something has changed real recently, you can't bring back ivory to the US from Mozambique or Zimbabwe. Hopefully the Zim rule will get rolled back with adequate data -- supposedly the concern was losses due to poaching and Tanzania got hit at the same time. Moz never got US approval for importation although it has CITES quota. Botswana is pretty much closed.

I'm a Canadian citizen and my research leads me to believe I can import from Moz. What my two contacts in Moz are saying is that poaching has picked up in an unbelievable way in the last 12 months. The coastal areas have been hammered.

I believe you are correct as Canadian Citizen..definitely not currently in the US..

Think the Caprivi strip is a good place as well as Zim still has some good bulls available with the right PH..the Caprivi will be high as this is one of the few places left a US citizen can still bring in ivory from..

For the longer thinner ivory Tanzani is an option as well..

Sorry -- I saw your location listed as in the US so gave US-oriented info.

Might be worth trying Derrick Littleton of Luwire Safaris or Jamie Wilson of Luambeze Safaris, both based in Nyassa. You might just find a 60+ pounder But gone are the possibility's of the big 80+ pounder bulls of only a few years ago.
