Petrov auction prices
      #257084 - 23/11/14 07:36 AM

I am shocked how weak the prices were for Michael's rifles. Many of them didn't reach the low estimate. I would not have dreamed the Minar rifle would go for $2,250 and the Bob Owen 12-c for $2,500. I picked up one high number G&H but would have put together a larger shopping list had I known.

Rigbys did well as did the best Mausers and several Colts and some of the pre-64 70's. Harvey Rogers also.

I am actually not that surprised.
This is what happens when an auction house dumps a number of rare guns on the market at once. Especially guns that are so few and far between and rarely come onto the market.
To get better prices, they should have had two auctions 6mos. apart IMO.
The 350 Rigby went for a pretty good deal and the 416 Rigby went for $27K I think. Sounds like a decent price for both parties.

3 Fred Adolph's and a Minar never made the estimated minimum......WTF. I guess the world is not ready for the American gunmakers.

I think many absentee bidders passed because they thought prices would be well above high estimates. That's what I thought, so I passed bidding on the Wundhammers, Dubiel mauser and others. That left people on the floor who weren't that interested in Michael's stuff. That's one theory anyway. I made 3 absentee bids. picked up lot 124 on a bid that I thought would have no chance and failed on bids for one of the colt kings and the .416 Rigby. After watching online for an hour I signed in and missed the Minar rifle and the Owen 12-c. In both cases i sat watching ridiculously low bids on the screen, expecting more bids, then when I did hit bid, the bids were accepted, then 'sorry just missed' and the item flashed off the screen. I think there will be a lot of people with regrets on this auction.

Unbelievable. I considered going but just assumed that there would be too many collectors and high rollers there, much less the dealers. I am just...shocked.

I remember the Emil McConnell estate auction in 2004 where the opposite happened. G&H rifles all went for more than the high estimate, with some bringing 3 or 4 times the high estimate. A Niedner Winchester 52 brought $66K.

I'd say this auction is the most surprising I've seen, by far.

Mike's probably very unhappy now. A lifetimes collection that went for a pittance.

I think Mike fully understood that life is not about collecting things, but rather about collecting knowledge and his two books and wonderful photos are gifts he left for all of us.

I just was informed by Amoskeag that two of Michaels Wundhammer rifle will remain in Alaska under my care for the time being. My Minar and Sedgley needed some friends.

Well done! Glad they went to you.

One of the Griffins will be with me, but I'm still lamenting 5 or 6 others that I didn't bid on.

Stretch did pretty well on the rigbys and the 6.5 x 54 Oberndorf, but the Type B's were bargains. I think the biggest bargains were the Minar, the non takedown Worthen, and the Owen 12-C - at least those are the ones I'd like to have another shot at. I think the low number Springfield curse played a role.

I like both those rifles - the dark wood and lines on the Griffin and the overall look of the Surkamer. The description on the surkamer mentions that it needs repair so I didn't bid on it. Again, stupid - missed some good opportunities.

Could you share a photo from the auction?
