Ruger 450/400 and Bertram Brass

Hi there.

I am still awaiting my license approval for a Ruger No.1 in 450/400 3" and am collecting components in the meantime. Unfortunately Hornady Brass is not available, with Bertram, which is about 3 times the Price in South Africa, being the only other option.

How does the Bertram compare and have there been any issues?

I Don't want to spend all the money on 100 pieces of Brass, when it could potentially give me problems. If there are problems, I'll just buy 20 for now and wait for Hornady to hopefully arrive soon.

Bertram brass is all I have ever used in my 450/400, have never had any issues and I am still on the original 40 - not sure how many times they have been used other than to say more than 8. I think there were some quality issues some years back but I am not aware of any problems now (Bertram brass is now used for Kynoch ammunition I believe)

Can't comment on the 450/400 brass but a few years ago I bought 3 boxes (60) 6.5 x 58r Sauer cases. 1/3 of them were unfinished, by that I mean they were straight walled and had missed some of the forming stages , They were like .410 shell cases. Seriously poor quality control (most concerning when it comes to reloading components) The rest had to be substantially re-worked before I could use them. OK, in the absence of alternatives I was glad I had 'em but disappointing nonetheless. Maybe I was unlucky and things may have improved meantime.

I have used Bertram brass for all of my "odd" size calibers, the larger cases (475 No2 X 3 1/2") have been fired at least 10 times with full loads, and I am just retiring my 45/120 cases after 9 years as the primer pockets are loose, these have been reloaded at least 5 times a year (45 loadings), so I have been more than satisfied with Bertram brass.

I have Hornady brass for my 450/400 3" Ruger No.1

I use Bertram brass for 500 - 31/4", 500/450 - 31/4" Magnum and 375 H&H Mag Fl. Very good brass.

Not in your calibre but I use Bertram 2nds for my 416Rigby. Some loaded to near Weatherby velocities and never a problem. Would not hesitate to use it.

If you get a bad batch send it back, they will replace it.
