458 WM effectiveness
      #25643 - 04/02/05 04:01 PM

Greetings all, on another forum there is a discussion of the relative effectiveness of the capabilities of the 458 WM on DG. Most maintain that the smallest effective 458 is the Lott, a very good cartridge but I think that the WM with a proper load (i.e. handload) is also effective. Say a 450/480 gr. at 2200 fps, others maintain that no it won't be as effective as the Lott, is 20 grs of weight and 100-150 fps really that imperative? The vaunted 450 Nitro was a 480 at 2150 correct? And it was well respected, whats changed? Have the big nasties gotten bigger and meaner? It's just a little confusing that one cartridge at a similar velocity/energy is effective while another would not be. Experienced opinions?

One of the threads on AR at the moment has a few blokes with chronograph results of Federal 470 Nitro ammo and that was all around the 2050 mark.

In two different 458 M70 Push Feeds I had 70 grains of ADI 2206 did 2030-2050 with 22 inch barrel. I also got the same with ADI 2207 with 60 "something" grains, I cant remember exact load. That was with 500 grain Hornady soft points.

I don't where you come from but if it is America ADI 2207 is like 4198 and ADI 2206 is like 3031.

Mike

I also have a push feed 22" model 70, I try to stick with 450/480 gr. loads to get the velocity up a little, I use IMR 3031 most of the time.
