Non "mauser" collecting
      #256342 - 07/11/14 03:18 AM

I was lucky to win this auction here:
http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=5141389&PHPSESSID=b3a2d765bd73a53fc6fc37f986d68e9c

As a former collector of genuine Oberndorf made Mauser rifle I always went passed all the other nice "Mausers" just because it didn´t say "Waffenfabrik Am Necker.Oberndorf".

Looking back now there was a few guns I should bought, because the were very nicely made guns like the one I just got a hold of.

I can tell this Kettner Mauser is a true pre-war(before 1914) made on a true Mauseraction by a good known gunsmith. As for me, this gun too represent a part of the Mauser story.

After all what do you get for USD 318,00??.

Well done! Nice looking rifle in good condition and the scope is worth the price you paid.

if you have an interest my lathe operator makes bullet sizing dies for 35 euro so you can become independent and use any .323 bullet by press it down to .318. my RCBS 8x57IS die set works fine if you resize the case without the decapping rod.

Congratulations! A really nice example of an early Suhl Mauser. Obviously this rifle was built by or for Ed.Kettner on an original Mauser, Oberndorf commercial action. Pre-WW1 Mauser patents were still valid, so everyone wanting to build a M98 action rifle had to buy an action from the Mauser factory first. Up to 1914, Mauser sold about 70% of their commercial production as “actions only” or barreled actions. These actions are easily dated by the Mauser commercial serial number and the help of Jon Speed’s book. On the actions sold by Mauser to other gunmakers you find the serial number under the receiver ring , behind the recoil lug, and on the rear wall of the magazine. As the Suhl gunmakers did not care about “matching Mauser serial numbers”, they quite often mixed up upper and lower metal, especially as they often converted the military floorplate to lever opening or detachable like on your rifle. The opening lever was a Suhl improvement, only later offered by the Mauser factory too.
Eduard Kettner, Köln, had a branch in Suhl from 1910 to 1925. The proofmarks under the barrel may also date the rifle. If a gauge number like 172,28 or 156,14 is there, it was proofed 1910 to 1912, if the bore Diameter is given as 7,8mm it was completed 1912 or later.

Thanks for sharing your immense knowledge Kuduae.

I personally like these type Pre-WW1 creations done by ein Meister büchsenmacher.

I also like this very Mauser because it is the original 8,0mmNx57 kaliber.

This gun here would be an end-goal for me regarding having a nice "Mauser".
