That garand is about the coolest gun I've seen! Looks awesome!

Dumprat, which black rifles do you prefer?

If I was going to own a "blackish" rifle it would be an AK. They are at least made of steel and wood. I have had bunch of older military rifles and some como bloc stuff but got bored of it. The 7.62x39 cartridge is in my opinion better than the .223. At lest you could kill a mule deer with it at reasonable range.

When I looked at a thread marked Modern sporting rifle I expected something more in line with this forum. Calling an Ar that starts us all down the path to people wandering around in the bush deer hunting with a three point sling, tactical vest, and a flashlight on the bottom of their Rifle and I find that turns my stomach.

If you Dumprat like AK -based all-steel and wood modern sporting rifle, this would be one good alternative to you:

Finnish made VALMET Petra in caliber .30-06:

They donīt make it anymore but used one could be find with a little luck...here is one older version for sale in caliber .308:

Some fancy wood and a re blue would make that a nice rifle wouldn't it. I shot one of those once. As I recall it shot pretty good.

The best attended serious precision competition shooting event in the western hemisphere is the CMP NTI Service Rifle match at the National Matches at Camp Perry each year. 98% of the over 1000 shooters use AR-15 style rifles. I spent all morning today at a service rifle match, that's 200-300-600 yards, shot a Master class score.

The AR is the greatest hobbyist rifle ever invented, for reasons mentioned above. Less popular for hunting, but that's changing.

Here in AZ I'd bet the majority of Coyote hunters use AR's and I've even started to encounter deer hunters using them, one guy in my deer camp carried one in .300 BLK this year.

I still prefer the Ruger #1 for hunting.
