Our worst scourge of the bush
      #255001 - 11/10/14 10:36 AM

I was sneaking (yeah right) down a steep hill gully on my way to hopefully spot a deer or two and saw the black stripes flash by in the berry bushes so i waited a bit and then watched this very fat Tom come out and start to stalk the rabbits on my side of the bush...oh for my 220 swift..or anything for that matter.I wasnt carrying anything `cept my cam.
The pic is demonstrative of his intent.

I knew the sambar frequented the thick Ti-tree area and set up at the wrong end as these deer showed up at 750 yards on the RF.

Then I saw this stag at 1200 yards downstream and watched him make his way to the spot below me,hes not a bad one either.

It's times like that that a nice combination gun would come in handy. Something like a Merkel U/O 16 Gauge over 222 Rimmed or 5.6x52R. Nice and light but with plenty of punch to deal with something like that tom cat at close range or a bit further out.

Feral cats are the biggest killer of small game in my area. They are to be shot on sight per state hunting regulations.
The Iowa DNR did a survey of the coyote's diet and found that cats make up on average, 40% of a coyotes food.

In Ontario, Canada as I became a licensed hunter of small game age 15, the game branch of that Province actually made laws to protect wildlife from domestic carnivores.
I think I can remember the exact words;

"It is the duty of every licensed hunter, to eradicate any domestic carnivore found more than 500yards from any out-buildings."

My hunting buddy Warren, a young farmer, used to keep the cat population on his farm at 17 cats. 1 more and the lot of them would start hunting the fields and surrounding bush for game. He's simply shoot and 'extra' cats and at a 17 count, they'd stay at home. He fed them calf "milk-replacer", and every one of them showed up for the evening 'drink' out of a huge circular barrel lid he used as their dish.

They would all be hunting anyway.

John- at 17 cats, they all stayed on the house, barn and outbuildings catching mice, sparrows and starlings. If the pop passed 17, they'd then start hunting in the fields. Warren made damn sure their numbers never passed 17.

Thanks. I thought so. I think its palms can be seen in the photo. Didn't enlarge it for a proper look.
