Interesting to get Petzals take on this. I read a lot of his articles and generally find him a no BS kinda guy..Not sure I agree with this choice, but we all have our opinions..do agree with the caliber however..

Well, let's see. Mr. Petzal has a push feed, fluted bolt rifle with a trigger safety and a bolt which almost certainly, although I couldn't confirm this, has a non-integral bolt handle. That's four strikes against it already. He attaches a lot of importance to the ease with which the bolt is operated, but makes no mention of the feeding qualities of the action. The rifle has a muzzle brake, which he recommends removing while hunting, because of the danger to the trackers' ears. What about his fellow shooters at the rifle range?

Xausa I prefer the 416 Rigby gracing your gunroom as well. I took a guy out this year who was using a 375 with a muzzle break and my ears are still ringing. Never again.

I would take yours as well..beautiful looking rifle..

As to muzzle breaks have never used one and really don't plan to..think I only have one gun that come with it and that's the Sako TRG-42 in 338 Lapua..shooting off the bench does make it comfortable to shoot lots of loads but MAN is it loud..no one hangs around me if I used it, so I took it off...

Many a PH have told me how they cringe when someone shows up with a mb on ...

The gentleman is obviously talking about what is a good DG rifle for his circumstances. For someone going to the rough once in a long while, for a few days, lots of things are not that important if the rifle feeds flawlessly, shoots well, and the shooter knows it intimately - and can fire it well, of course.

Now, if the rifle does spend most of its time bumped around on the back of a pickup, carried in the dust and the rough for hours, thrown in a corner when coming back late and exhausted at night, that rifle does need more intrinsic reliability than the platform shown in the video...

Oh, and the gentleman did say clearly that you want to remove the muzzle brake for hunting. Thanks for that, every PH I know has a deep aversion for these things. When hunting with a client, a PH can't always protect his ears in time, and permanent tinnitus is not an amusing condition.

I'm with Phil on this.

I bought a used Mod70 458Win Mag for about the same price as a new one, simply because I knew it had been worked over by a pro and feeds and functions reliably. Even a new rear express sight and front sight.
