"Straight Grain On The Wrist" on gunstocks
      #25350 - 29/01/05 06:30 AM

Gentlepeople:

I am in the process of putting together a .416 Rigby on the Montana Rifleman's new "Professional Hunter" action. Delivery is expected to be in "the Fall of 2005."

I already have in my posession a (what I consider) BEAUTIFUL Turkish Walnut rifle blank that is over three years old.

In looking at this blank, it appears that on the grip area (the wrist) the grain isn't as straight as some other blanks that I've seen. In your experience, could this be a problem for me considering I'm using this blank for a .416 Rigby?

I have another questions that I will post in another post.

Thanks in advance for any inputs/suggestions/opinions.

I can get a picture of the blank if any of you want to see it.

That's really a tough call. A lot of it will depend on how well the stock is bedded, as well as the density of the wood itself. If at all possible, can you post a picture of the blank?

Mike:

I will try to post one over this weekend. (Never done it, hope posting pics isn't hard--any guidance would be appreciated.) I hope all is well in your world.

Don't count your chickens (PH actions) before they are hatched (delivered).

A photo is necessary and if you send me a photo I will post it for you

I have a hunch it's quite ok.....but a look will help.

You can always reinforce the wrist which is not a bad idea anyway. You can either drill and epoxy in a hardwood dowel or as I usually do use a 5/16" drillbit and just epoxy the bit in. The length is almost exactly the right length and the flutes give space for the Acraglas to give good coverage. I don't have big hands so I like small diameters at the wrist. I know several top stockers who use a dowel.

Vapodog:

I just sent you an email with two pics of the blank. (One pic of each side.)

Regarding the Ph action from MR, I think you are right about the shipping being delayed. Are you familiar with this action? What are your thoughts?

Thanks for helping me post pics here.

The 1999 action (which I have) will hold the (ballistically equivalent) .416 Remington and you can count on it being shipped. The PH will get there when enough folks pay up front for it to finance the tooling.....who knows!!!
Sorry about the pics...I got them and they're way too big to download. I did see them thru the server but they're 1.3 MB and all the photos I take are 30 KB and on the phone lines they are about as fast as molasses in January.
It's simply impractical to upload them to a photohost and then link them back to nitroexpress.

I can say that I would not use the blank for something as heavy recoiling as a .416 anything but it's a beautiful piece of wood and would make a spectacular .243.

The grain in the "wrist" area is perpendicular to the line of recoil force. It might work fine.....but this not what I want to be wondering about while hunting that cape buffalo and after having paid all the cash.

Here's a suggestion for you: contact Larry at Serengeti Stock Works www.serengetistockworks.com and forward him this thread so he can see the blank. They do beautiful laminated stocks. They don't look like any laminated stock you've seen before. I recently had them do one for me on my 375 Ackley. It's from a AAA Claro blank that I got from their inventory. Take a look at their website, and let me know what you think. It might be usable for your 416 because of their exclusive process.

Thanks Erik....you obviously have a far better internet connection than I do.....It took me almost 1/2 hour to download the photos. I've posted for others before and had this problem but not always.

hmmm
the 416 doesn't require a super strong stock, imho, as it's not a stock splitter, once bedded and crossbolted.

The stock is beautiful.. but, again, imho, unsuitable for a bigbore..

it's one of those things that is mostly opinion!!

All:

I trust your judgement and will not use this on my .416 project.

I'm thinking about making a .30-06 out of it for my son when he is old enough.

Anyone got any good recommendations on an action and barrel for a .30-06.

I think this stock should hold up to a .30-06 recoil...do you not agree?

look around for a cheap M-70 in .30-06 and simply restock it. I have three M-70s that was sold under $300 (new) as the model Ranger and they're great as a barreled action and when restocked they're great guns.....price was right and they shoot extrtemely good. At times I've also bought M-70 barreled actions.....but you have to search for them.

That wood will turn any barreled action (including a Mauser) into a "looker".

This is a really awfully laid out blank. The other problem with Turkish blanks is that they are either boiled or steamed for 24 hours which drives out all of the natural oils. This allows them to be dry in a couple months, but they will never stabilize. It is a horrible thing to do to wood.

A 5/16" pin is an excellent idea. It have saved the Weatherby designed stock. But use steel, not a wooden dowell. Epoxy it into place. Poor grain flow only has 5% of the full wood strength according to Mark's Mechanical Engineering Handbook. Be careful of the wrist and action area, especially. Weatherby forgot a pin in a 1997 270 W'by and it was horrible grain in the wrist. It broke when fired and did brain damage to the shooter. I was the expert witness in the case. A 416 is a lot more gun than a 270. Those pins are very good ideas.
