Cape Buffalo night hunting?
      #253001 - 31/08/14 03:08 PM

A question for experienced cape buffalo hunters here on NE.

What do you think of the following? Plus have you ever heard of it before?

An outfitter/PH recommended to his client, that they needed to hunt the cape buffalo bull at night. Using a hand held light or spotlight.

Also relevant is they needed to take the buffalo, that night, even though there was five days of hunting time still available.

Somewhat different. But I have heard of the use of a spotlight to hunt leopard over bait, in places where it is legal. Also the use of a hand held torch to kill crop raiding elephant on PAC elephant hunts. Surely those might get exciting. Not sure about lion hunting at night. First time I have heard of "hunting" cape buffalo as a "trophy" at night.

Illegal in many countries, not even sure if legal anywhere except perhaps on a private property.

Old dagga boys are creatures of habits, and often graze the same area at night when they feel safer - especially close to villages or in cultivated fields. If you knew the preferred cabbage patch of a trophy bull, you could ambush him at night with a flashlight. Like most animals caught in lights at night, he'd be a bit of a sitting duck if he did not wind you.

Now, if you messed up the shot, you'd have gotten yourself a wounded buffalo in the dark, and a proper screw-up on your hands.

No real PH I know would take a client on such a mickey-mouse "hunt".

On a different note, we do hunt problem hippos at night - because that's when they come out of the water, and you can get the particular one you're after. This can indeed become "interesting"... Don't know if some operators do take clients on these PAC expeditions, though.

I've never heard of night hunting as an option.

Most likely illegal and probably not a good idea anyway.

I believe it was legal as it was on a private farm in South Africa. I believe that was investigated by the client after leaving the hunt due to concerns.

More on the story.

It was a female hunter who is an online friend of mine. She was hunting plains game but was offered a cape buffalo hunt as well. She is an honest person and I believe was led into it, not realising it.

For whatever reason she was taken to shoot the bull at night, with the aid of a light. The bull came regularly to eat at an alfalfa pellet feed trough and that was where it was planned to shoot the bull.

I believe a shot was taken at the bull from the front which is a more difficult shot to make for a kill shot. The bull was wounded and escaped. The PH and the hunter tried to find it the next day but were unsuccessful. She was then told they couldn't follow it anymore even though she wanted to and there were several more hunting days available. In the end she was told a story that the bull had been taken to another property. She paid the trophy fee in total in good faith as an honest person.

Obviously a lot more to this story. It appears that one PH was licenced for dangerous game while a second was not. When the first DG licenced PH was no longer available they stopped looking for the bull.

The lady hunter is an honest hunter and had concerns about the whole affair.

My question here was if anyone had ever heard of a cape buffalo being "hunted" at night like this? Because it seem extraordinary to me, and not sporting in the least. Add to that a bull which is fed by alfalfa pellets so the outfitter knows where it will be and when. Maybe it only came to the feed at night, thereby the outfitter thinking shooting it at night was the "way to go"? To me the supplementary feeding like that again is evidence of a non fair chase sporting hunt. Really confirms to me my negativity on 95% of cape buffalo "hunting" in South Africa. Other clients may think differently where taking a trophy is the main objective. I suppose that is up to them.

The story was on a multi-page thread on another forum, where there are a lot of outfitters. Most of who are "in the trade".

My feelings are most experienced DG hunters would not have considered a cape buffalo hunt of this nature. Experience and knowledge before hand being the key points. The client here ended up paying honestly for a trophy fee for nothing in my opinion.

She is keen to hunt cape buffalo again, so has not been soured by the experience. I think a hunt on truly wild herds would be a far more enjoyable experience. I have messaged her about this thread so hopefully stay friends afterwards!

Yep, the story got all the ingredients of a great South African experience!

Frankly, I know some very good guys from down South, but many "PH" make me wonder, as they are clearly not Hunters, and definitely not Professionals. The problem is that it's the bad ones that give a bad name to the good ones, not the other way around...

I followed this story on another forum with some interest and don't really know what to make of the whole thing. I know if I was on a hunt for Buffalo and the PH suggested a night "shoot" that would probably be the end of the hunt. I would imagine the lady was under some pressure to accept. The only thing I wonder about is if she had made a good shot and killed the animal would we have heard anything about it.
