Dry-Season Pelagics
      #252573 - 23/08/14 11:05 PM

The cooler months in the Top End usually bring good numbers of Spanish Mackerel and Northern Bluefin Tuna into Darwin Harbour, but they have been a bit "hit-and-miss" so far this year.

Hooked this nice Spanno the other day, better than 30lbs at a guess, and lost a bigger one when the crane swivel on my leader broke. ...lost the lure too!

Heading out tomorrow for another shot at them if the wind is not too gusty. Maybe pick up that one that got away...!

The 10-weight will be on board this time, so hopefully the long-tails will play the game.

8x57:
Unfortunately the tuna were very scattered and were hitting the top in twos and threes for just a few seconds each time. Very difficult to get within range for a shot with the fly.
Boy I tried, though!
Marty got a nice spanno on the troll, but we couldn't find the big ones.
That's fishin'....

Marty's fish:

Not to worry: back out again in a day or two.....

Had some rotten luck yesterday, 5 hookups and only 1 fish landed, a nice spanno ~10kg that Marty got to the boat.

I had a big one ~15kg pull the hooks after a blistering run of 150m or so, Marty lost another good one similar size to a shark: took the fish, lure, and half the trace in one bite, absolutely shredded the 60lb wire!
We are careful not to fall overboard out there!
Unfortunately no tuna showed up so the flyrod never came out of the rack.

There's always tomorrow.....

Whether or not you have great luck, you remember every day spent fishing.

"A bad day's fishing is better than a good day at work"

Don't know who said that but I'm in agreement!
