Help with Mauser ID
      #252498 - 21/08/14 07:45 PM

Hi there, My first post after discovering this site.
I have recently bought this full stocked Mauser carbine. I'd like some help getting some info about it. Unfortunately the action and barrel are epoxied in to the stock so I can't see the proof marks on the action.
It is an 8x57JS. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Gidday Stug (and welcome, I think I recognise that moniker from some of our other NZ forums)

I make no claims to be a Mauser expert . . . so this is only 2 cents worth !!

It looks to me like a standard 98 which has had the military barrel shortened, tangent sight removed, and new sights added, and restocked, somewhat after the fashion of a "guild gun", although I don't think yours is a guild gun.

Does it have any marks on the top of the reciever ??

You may be able to remove the stock by judicious use of heat (or freezing), if you can get the action screws out then putting a set of stockmakers pins in (you can use hardward store bolts of the right size with the heads removed) and giving them a tap or 3 will help.

Cheers
Foster

Hi Foster, Yep you will recognise my username from NZ forums.
I have managed to get the action out of the stock. There are no markings on the action, but the barrel does have SV 2013 8x57 stamped on it.

The 749 stamp might refer to Gustloff Werke Weimar

Stu.

Thanks Lancaster, Yes it is nicely put together. It won't be a safe queen. I put some shots through it today, trying 150 Sierras. I'll try a few more tomorrow.

That rifle was a good deal. This won't help with the 98 identification, but that's a winchester model 70 butt plate.

Yep it was a good price. Thanks for the info on the butt plate, didn't realise Winchester did steel butt plates.
