1923 spandau

Picked this one up a bit ago. What can you guys tell me about it? Numbers matching. Has all the crowns. Has a 23.5" barrel that doesn't appear to have been shortened. It is an 7.92 stamped. Has a very original looking stock with a horn grip cap and a very narrow but tall forend. Has a marbles rear sight and the front sight has been repaired.

Poor old girl is a bit rusty but is cleaning up with some oil. The blueing is even pretty good under the rust. The stock has a bit of cast off as well.

After much cleaning the stamp on the top of the receiver is 1903 not 1923.

I cleaned the stock last night. It came out better than I had hoped. The stock shape is different but very well fitted and has hand cut checkering and small amount of cast off.

Sporterized and restocked Gewehr 98 German military rifle. Probably done during the interwar years in the USA or Canada. Germans then did not use Marble sights on sporters.

Very possible. Even likely. I know the source of the action already.

I was more interested in information on similarly stocked rifles. The stock is extremely old . My last Mauser had a mail order stock that was put on just after WW2 this stock appears older than that. It is very well fitted and of sort of peculiar style. Long American style forend with an English style but with cast.

Such stocks, from pre-shaped to fully finished, were available from several sources in the 1930s. Here is the ad from the 1940 Shooter's Bible:

Yes I had a bishop on my last Mauser. This one is different. Have another look.

That's it for info?

Oh well still well worth the $200 I paid for it. Just another fun old rifle.
