My New (Used) Rifle Is Almost Here
      #2493 - 26/04/03 12:29 PM

Some 20+ years ago, I bought my first .375 H&H, a Whitworth Express, imported to the U.S. by Interarms. At that time I had high hopes of making a trip to Africa, so I just had to have a .375 H&H. Well, after a few years, I saw that going on Safari just wasn't in the cards in the forseable future, so I sold the gun(and made a nice tidy profit). Since then, I've been fortunate enough to be able to make several trips to Africa and used a Winchester Model 70 that I rechambered to 375 Ackley Improved. This piece has served me very well, but deep inside I've been really craving a reunion with a Whitworth Express like my 1st 375. Well, about a month ago, I put a search request out on the internet to see if anyone had one for sale, and about a week later I got a response from a guy near Dallas, TX. He said he had one in like new condition and he would let me have it for $550.00. I jumped on the chance, and today I was notified by my gunsmith that it arrived in his shop, and that it looks as though it's had no more than a single box of shells through it. He said that the wood is fantastic, and has a wonderful oil finish. The only problem now is that my gunsmith is 90 miles away from me and I won't have it in my hands until next week . I haven't been this anxious since I got married 28 years ago.

I thought about it, but my wife and I are going away on holiday in a few weeks, and I promised her I'd take her shopping today for some clothes she said she needed. She must really need them too, because when we built the new house 2 years ago I had 4 walk-in closets built in the master bedroom, and she has 3 of them full . But then again, she's never checked out my gun safe, so I'll just keep my mouth shut.

Well, the Whitworth is finally in my safe keeping , and what a beauty! Lovely wood, lots of color, and a lovely finish . She's a shooter too . I put a Leupold 1.75X6 on her, and took her out to the range for some test firing. I was shooting some Remington Safari Grade Ammo, with the 300 grain Swift A-Frame, and 3, 3 shot groups at 100 yards were all 3/4" or less . I'll try and get some pics of the rifle posted for everyone to drool over.

Mike,

that rifle is a dead ringer for my own, hopefully with one difference which you know about .

Even the same scope which from its size is I am guessing a compact model of the 1 1/6 to 6 x Leupold. I had the same scope on for the trip to Zim but it is too short for a M98 action so needs a bridge mount or offset two piece mounts.

Your rifle also has a barrel band mounted sling swivel where as mine had the stud on the foreend. Hasn't hurt me yet there yet either.

MIke,

The rifle sure looks good but I must say it looks very close to my Musgrave K98 375 H&H except for having the belt fixed to the fore-end stock and not on the barrel like yours. Mine also as a good Timney trigger on it.

It shoots great and I suppose the thicker barrel does help with recoil as well.

Thanks. I'm very please with it so far. I suppose all Mausers look somewhat alike. I'm scrounging around right now trying to find a Model 70 type safety for it. Right now it has the sliding tang safety of the older variety that locks the bolt.

MIke,

My safety sits on the left hand side and flick up or down but also locks the bolt. I don't know if you do get safeties that will let you work the bolt while on safety if there are that will be a first for me to hear about it

I may be mistaken(wouldn't be the first time, and sure won't be the last), but I'm pretty sure that the newer Remington 700s allow you to work the bolt with the safety engaged. The older models locked the bolt up. I preferred the older 700s because now while you're walking through the bush with the new models, the bolt can lift up without you knowing it.
