Best options for a left-handed big bore rifle??
      #24904 - 23/01/05 04:57 AM

I am a lefty and I want to get into the big bore guns and I was wondering what would be my best options for a left-handed big bore.

I know that they make a model 70 lefty in 375 H&H which I want one of those, but to get anything bigger than a 375 in a lefty I think you have to get one from their custom shop. Is their a better option? or shoud I just buy a second 375 lefty and rebarrel it for a larger caliber based on the 375 case??
I am mostly just going to be using these for fun and to make my hunting more interesting but I do plan to go to Africa one day but I don't know when..\
Also on the same token what would be the best barrel length, weight etc for a dangerous game rifle that will hopefully see Africa one of these days?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

FWIW once you have a left handed anything it's not too hard to rebarrel it to almost anything you want.

You can build Left Handed Mark X Mausers into anything up to 500 Jeffrey.
I know a couple of people who have done it and they good.

I have a left hand Weatherby that I had made into a .500 Jeffrey by Sabi Rifles here in Nelspruit RSA......And I love it to bits!

As to barrel length I'd say go for as short a barrel as you can as it will mean faster target acquisition which is very important in a DG rifle.

FWIW, Sabi Rifles do make left hand rifles at reasonable prices. A client of mine is just having a .458 Lott made to measure on a right handed mauser action and that's costing around R25000/US$4000...........not cheap, but not expensive for a custom made rifle........although it would have cost more had he opted for an upgrade on the wood etc.

I'm left handed and own a few lefty bolts. The biggest bore as of right now is a Heym SR 20 classic in 375 H&H. Here's a link to the latest web site. http://www.heym-waffenfabrik.de/english/S_Buechs/S_MagBue/st_MagBu.html
They show almost every caliber made.
Weatherby does a fair job for lefty's. There's a left handed Mauser model 3000L in 375 H&H around on Gunsamerica pretty regularly.
I think if you look around and listen you'll see the left handed world is not as limited as it was years ago.

I, too, was scrutinizing them and they look like well designed rifles and they are stocked in the style I like. I'd like to see the costs and locations as well.

Ridgerunner:
Being a south-paw himself, Boddington has some good info on big-bore bolt-rifles for lefties in his book 'Safari Rifles'. Bit dated these days, but still good stuff.

I tried a search for Heym rifles half a dozen sites come up but nothing with prices or any real inventory. I bought mine when Paul Jeager was still in business. What a job he did finishing this gun.

But the sites that came up were, New England Gun, Euro Gun imports, Holland and Holland, Griffin and Howe.
Try the search and make some calls. It's a fine rifle.
I really love mine. 1 1/4 -4 Schmidt bender Eaw quick detacheable mount, Jeager express sites. When I can borrow my sons camera I'll try to post a pix.

I'm not a lefty, just thinking out loud here. How about a single shot, or a double? Ruger makes the No.1 in several big bore rounds, up to the .458 Lott.

I rather have a bolt because hopefully in a few years I will take the rifle to Africa, so I want more than one shot on dangerous game.
Would love to have a double but as of now it is not in the budget..

ridgerunner,
Get yourself a couple of LH Model 70s in .375H&H. Keep one as a .375, and build something on the other (e.g., .400H&H, .416 Hoffman, .416 Remington, .458 Lott, .470 Capstick).

The rifle in the photo below is a LH Model 70 .470 Capstick, built on what was once a .375H&H.

I have a Lefty .375H&H Winchester 70 and I am thinking of getting a Custom Shop .416Rigby Winchester 70 after that the other options depend on how much you want to spend. The ultimate would be a Dumoulin magnum mauser but the price! Granite Mountain Arms, Dakota are also good but due to price I am going to get a Winchester .416Rigby 70 Custom Shop or you can get a good 'smith to make one up.

Doesn't Savage make the Safari .458 Win Mag in a lefty?

GeorgeS,
That is probably what I will do is just get a couple of lefty model 70's especially for the price and all as I know I can get two model 70's for the price of one weatherby, or dakota etc.
Thanks everyone for all of your opinions, I think in my situation this just would make the most sense for me.

The nice thing about doing it this way is that the gun turns out the way YOU want, not the way someone else THINKS it should be.
