Westley Richards Cape Rifle
      #247940 - 27/05/14 07:14 AM

Hi Guys - I bought this Westley Richards Cape Rifle on Saturday

Built for the South African trade it is in 577/450 and 12 bore

For the casual hunter/explore/farmer? who could only have one gun, the 577/450 would take any game, and the 12 bore for flying or small game for the pot
I have one in percussion by Evans in .500 & 12 bore

I would imagine the 577/450 was chosen as it was the British Army Martini Henry cartridge. I have a couple

Very plain, not even the maker's name on the locks. Nice fences

The stock but not the fore end has been sympatheticaslly refinished at some time

Doll's Head extension for extra strength

Bores are very good

W-R mark and "Special Quality"

The only name The Damascus twist is clear in this and the previous pic

The usual South African multiple sights to a very optimistic 1000 yards!!

Black powder Birmingham proofs

Hi John

Yes it is Black Powder proofed, I tend to prefer using the original powder it was designed for

I have a .577/450 M/H on certificate and sometimes use BP in that, and certainly on anything earlier, so will go the BP way

I am told by the dealer that it shoots very well, and will try it myself in due course

Thank you both for your interest/comments

I think it will be quite a fun gun. The .577/450 will be adequate on most deer, and the shottie for rabbits and birds. Good for a stroll with a dog and gun.

I figure a "like" is assumed.
What's not to like about this gun!
Someday I would like a cape gun like this too.

I sold my only W-R 10 years ago. If I could own one like this, I'd trade my front seat in hell for it. However, retired and broke, my money must go to necessities (BMW motorcycle, 2015 safari, etc.)

Seeing this I think my gun cabinet is lacking!

Let us know how she shoots.

Back in the day that would have protected and provided for a family or two.

Nice
