A solution to NT's cane toads?

NT traps manage toad numbers
11:50 AEDT Sun Jan 16 2005

Cane Toads are being successfully trapped in the Northern Territory, experts said.

The Sunday Territorian reported that field trials have shown that cane toads can be eliminated locally through trapping.

FrogWatch joint coordinator Graeme Sawyer said test site have been kept relatively toad-free with a single cage trap.

"Our tests near Katherine and Adelaide River showed that traps initially catch all the toads in the area around a house or block within a few weeks," Mr Sawyer said.

"Any new toads that move into the same area are also quickly caught."

He said the toads are attracted to a solar-powered light placed in the trap or the insects that are attracted by the light.

The one-way gate trap allows toads to push their way into a cage from which they can't escape.

Pie in the sky answer I think. This might be fine around a house, but what about the untold thousands and thousands of square kilometres of bush?

Bakesey

Is this the right thread ?

I love it. If it stirs the pot of steaming vegetables and gets them into a boil. Maybe it will make their weak insipid anaemic blood pump a little harder for a minute or two until they faint from the exertion.

I love the MLA's comment to the steamed grazers and browsers (ie vegetarians) to

"have some fun and eat a lamb chop."

Back to toads, I think a bounty would be the go, but the parks people think we are stupid and can't tell the difference between a toad and a frog

Cane Toads are very versatile.

They be used as pets then ...

Used as golf balls;

Used a cricket balls;

Used as base balls;

Used as mulch in the garden;

Rifle target practice;

Used as clay pigeons;

Used in live pigeon shoots!

Really their application is endless.

Vapo,

I really do like toads. I think they are my favorite animal. But our toads are not in plague proportions, either. Truthfully, there are not enough of them around my parts.

I have had pet toads that learned quite quickly they could get some easy meals if they sat patiently in my hand and I pointed them at a fly buzzing on a window glass. Truly entertaining to watch! Kinda like point-and-click with a computer mouse. They even learn when they hear your voice it is feeding time.

When I lived in QLD, I enjoyed firing them from my orange cannon, 200m average distance! They still live at the other end though! Air gun won't kill them, even a head shot and they hop away. 5 iron is the best allround 'tool', breaks their skull and pretty much takes them down. We used to have reqular 'hunts' to clean them up and it would really keep the numbers down.

I agree it is a bit of a waste of time trapping them in suburbia when there is probably 10,000,000 acres of bush in the territory for them to infest but something has to be done! If you can only kill 500 per year then that is 500,000,000 eggs that don't get laid next year and that's gotta count for something if everyone is doing it.

Widespread trapping within the territory would help keep the numbers down, but never eradiacate them all.

The CSIRO should have been on this problem 20 years ago and developed a biological agent to kill them or make them sterile. The cane toad will decimate the wildlife in the NT, right though the food chain.

I hate them, as you may have noticed, the idiots who brought them here need to be slapped around for a week or two! hehehe
