Type A or B?
      #245082 - 05/04/14 07:36 PM

I picked up this rifle in Sweden a few years ago. Any thoughts on whether it is a Type A or B? I've assumed it to be a Type B because it lacks the English style leaf sights, but now beginning to wonder.

There is at least 8 different versions of Type A Mauser and 16 different Bīs so itīs not so easy to determine exact model. But yours rifle seems to have better quality stock wood and horn forend tip which are typical for Type A so I vote for it.

Could you argue yours opinion ? Some Type A`s have tangent rear sight as well Type B could have two leaves rear sight.

B for sure.
Igorrock, I am not seeing the horn tip. I think you skipped to another rifle on the photobucket album or something.
Metalwork aside, simply because there are so many variations among the types, the single feature of the TypeA is the rounded horn forend tip.
I would have to look closer to be sure but IIRC the forend checkering on the type A is different than the B which typically is as your gun shows.
Very nice rifle all the same.

According to Jon Speed's books your rifle is a model B, order # 126F, factory code BHJ2DF,Mauser description: 600 mm half-octagon barrel, hunting rear sight up to 300 m, single military type trigger, checkered foreend. This one made in 1937.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone. I thought it was probably a Type B.

By the way, for those who may not be aware, Speed's original book as well as the smallbore book are back in print in a limited edition. You can order online through Collector Grade Publications in Canada (original publishers).

Yes model B in my opinion, I have never seen a Type A without the front sight barrel band, and front sling barrel band, also never seen one without the horn forend either. If you take a look at the original Mauser advertising brochure for the Type A in Speed's Original Oberndorf Sporters, or The Mauser Archive, you will see that the type A is described as specifically having the features I just mentioned. Checquering pattern and LPI are different from a B, Model M or S as well. Sling swivels are different as well on an A. As for the quality of the wood in my opinion it is not a good indicator because often times B's will have stocks with nicer figure and mineral staining than A's,(I have a few). But usually A's tend to have nicer stocks. I'll bet members here have some B's with pretty dandy stocks.

I would guess about 3.5K USD for a worn example to maybe 9K USD for a really nice one with desirable features (DSB, etc.) You could probably get a very presentable one for 5K.

For illustration purpose, a typical example of a 9,3x62 A type made circa 1935.

Nice looking rifle.

Others have mentioned that the checkering pattern on types A and B (those with forend checkering that is) is different. However, looking at my B above, and the A, I don't see any difference in the checkering on either pistol grip or forend.

Mckinney, Your not looking at the checkering on the type A close enough. Take another look it is significantly different from the model B.

I think the forend checkered area is a bit longer on the TypeA but I would have to measure to be certain.
I have one unaltered A (10.75) which has flat top checkering and one A (30'06) which has been recut to sharp checkering. Not sure if all As originally had flat checkering or not. Dorleac's 9.3 looks to have flat checkering too.
The 10.75 has a longer forend panel than the 30'06 which resembles the checkering on my TypeG and TypeS Kurz.

As to the checkering above the trigger, the Bs border runs angled down right to the trigger area and the As have a border running up away from the trigger and forward to a point.
My G and S Kurz both have the same grip checkering as the B.

The model B's usually have foreend checkering that is scalloped, but they also can have checkering identical to the type A's foreend as well. The difference is in the pistol grip checkering.

DW, I see it now. It doesn't help that my photos are not nearly as good as Dorleac's, and the checkering on the B is more worn. A side by side comparison with photos of equal quality is needed. There may be a difference in lines per inch as well, but I'm not able to tell from the photos.
