What do I have?

I picked up a project double rifle last week and am not sure exactly what it is. Photos are attached, but you can see that it is actually a boxlock with side plate extensions to make it look like a side plate. The only markings are the serial number and one stamp with a FN under it, which makes me believe it was produced by FN, but I could easily be wrong. On top of the lever release is a gold number "2", and ahead of the safety is a gold "Z." The triggers seem to be unique in that the go up and down slightly when the safety is moved back and forth. Does anyone recognize this action and have any details on it? It is a real mystery to me.

Bruce

Hungarian proofmarks. Circled crown/BP = black powder (first) proof, in use from 1892 to 1948. FN = Nitro proof, in use from 1904 to 1971. Those telltale circular reinforcing bolsters around action bar - standing breech are also found on the (then) cheap Hungarian shotguns imported into Germany 30 to 50 years ago, called "Modell Puszta" by the importers. Those guns were probably made by the Budapest arms factory Fegvergyar. The "2" on the opening lever indicates it was once #2 of a pair.

It might have been cheap then, but it is nice now. I like it. You say it is a double rifle, what calibre?

The barrels are a new set of 470s, but have not been chambered yet. Interesting to hear it is Hungarian.

Just curious but it sounds like it was built a shotgun and now you're putting 470 Nitro barrels on it ? Is that safe ?

I am reasonably sure it was a shotgun as double rifles don't usually come in pairs whereas shotgun pairs built for driven game were usually numbered. A few years ago I saw a four gun numbered set @ H&H in NYC. Very nice and VERY expensive !

Ruger 450, you should read that book:

Yeah I read that book years ago but, as I recall, those guns were built on modern box lock actions not "who knows how old, who knows what metallurgy" actions.

I'd be happier with a Winchester M 21 action as a basis for a DR. If you had a 2 barrel set you could just reline one and still have a fine shotgun too for less money than a quality DR.

While I love my classic double shotguns, I can shoot my Sporting Clays Browning Cynergy much better. Wonder if the same thing would be true of an O/U rifle ?

I did not mean "cheaply made", but "sold cheaply" like so many other products from behind the iron curtain. Of course, those FEG, Hungaria 100S "Puszta" boxlocks of the 1960s - 80s were much less refined than the earlier sideplated example posted by MiBruce here, but the "earmarks" are the same: Round bolsters on action, hidden third bite, invisible crosspin. As you see, those "Puszta" guns were available in 16 or 12, ejector or non-ejector.
