I'll second the suggestion on the 350gr. Hornady. It is an amazing .458" bullet on game.

Well I have now been out four times with my own loads. Concentrating on the advice above:
1) Tightened the necks by sizing with a 30-06 size FLS die; thanks Huvius, very successful.
2) Shooting offhand with barrels gripped well forward.
3) Got a couple of other experienced members to also shoot it. One who sweetens his days with a .500Nitro said it has no recoil at all! I think that is good testimony to the combination of lighter bullet (300gn), reasonable weight of rifle and lovely English stocking with some cast-off and a wide buttplate.

Here is the usual result, left and right barrels on an air pistol target shot offhand at 25m:

The sight picture requires the bead to be at the bottom of the deep V rearsight for these little aiming marks. I find the trigger pull crisp and responsive, most satisfying. I wish I were a better shot though!

Next: more projies, I shot off all the jacketed ones. Magnum primers and maybe some filler to reduce unburned powder.

I had one of my guests filming video as I shot it and she clearly said: "That is a MANLY rifle!"

Appears with that load, the bullets would cross about 2"(just a guess) at 100yards, and be about zero'd at that range, if the rear sight was moved slightly right to compensate for the left impact.
That probably isn't bad, however longer ranged leafs would continue to spread.

Slightly less powder, or slightly more - or different wads the change the recoil characterisitcs might spread the barrels to more parallel impacts and drop the poi slightly.

A change to 350gr. might also have that effect, or might increase the current tendencies.

Looking pretty good, but 2 shots only makes it very difficult to judge accurately.

2 or 3 sets of targets of 2 shots each will be present a more accurate picture to judge.

You are right Daryl; I have shot a half dozen cards like that, but not photographed them all; just hitting the black is satisfying because its offhand and the 'grouping' is very questionable, at least in my hands. As I practise with it and maybe set up a soft standing support, the picture will get clearer.
