Rigby Mauser 98 .303 British
      #243757 - 14/03/14 02:14 AM

A few years back I was at the range shooting a Ruger M-77 30-06 with a cheap Bushnell 4X scope ....The rifle was accurate and I was shooting small groups at 200 yards. The only people there that day were a father and son pair who were sighting in a.303 British sporter. I got the idea it was their only rifle. They didn`t seem to know much about guns but they sure didn`t like their rifle. They complained about it being out of date, not having a scope, etc. They really liked my Ruger and the accurate shooting I was doing with it. I had a look at their rifle. It was a Rigby Mauser 98 sporter in .303 British. It had all the correct Rigby, London markings and was in what appeared to be very good condition, a bit dirty and greasy but all original, good blue, good wood, etc. I had never seen one. When they saw that I liked their rifle, they suggested a swap...my Ruger and Bushnell scope for their Rigby .303, and maybe they could throw in some cash....but I just couldn`t take advantage of them...I told them that their rifle was worth a lot more than mine and I didn`t do the deal. I regret it a bit. I sold that Ruger a long time ago and don`t miss it, but I still remember that Rigby Mauser .303.

Paul Roberts once told me: There were 48 such rifles, short intermediate action, slant magazine box, .303 British, ever sold by Rigby.

Rpeck.......feel sorry for you matey!
Kicking yourself I bet for the rest of your life - would have been a good swap, even if you had to pay them a pile of cash.
We've all done some silly trades or lack of it, never gets any easier.
Bet you never do that again.

Remember, they were the ones who wanted to add some cash to the deal, not me!! At the time, my Ruger and scope was probably worth about $500., including the ammo I had with me at the range. The value of their rifle?...Several thousands I suppose...I have no idea how many.

I'm not kicking myself...I don't feel all that bad about it (at least no worse than I feel about missing out in 1980 on a Velocette 500 for sale for 200 bucks...a barn find in Nova Scotia). You can't own everything, and I really don't want to...but it sure would have been a nice rifle to have, at least for awhile.

I shot at that same range (in a suburb of Vancouver, B.C.) for years and never saw that father-son pair or that rifle again. I wonder if they still have it and if they still don't like it much. To them it was just another old .303.

I am assuming the W.W. Greener Mauser 98 Sporter in .303 British is much more common. Does anyone have experience with these?...any comments?...one has been recently offered to me.
