Merkel 140-2-1

Hi Folks ,

I have just picked up a Merkel DR in 500 NE 3" . The rifle shoots well but the Greener cross bolt has to be manually closed with the thumb level each time the action is closed . Will this loosen up a bit with use or is there a more cryptic issue ? Thanks Jim

That is normal. Mine was that way also. You don't need to push it all the way closed, just snug.

Bonanza is correct. The user manual mentions this issue and states that after a couple hundred rounds the action should work in and not be so tight to close.

My .500NE was really tight to close, but after several hundred rounds it is much smoother. To work it in I wasn't bashful about closing it right smartly - something I would never do with a vintage rifle.

I have a Merkel 140A in 500NE and it does the same thing. Part of the problem is that there is a wooden block that the catch mechanism slides against inside the action - seems to be deliberate. I saw this when I had mine pulled apart (will try and dig photos up when I get home). I carefully shaved some timber off it to lessen the resistance and it made a big difference, but it tightened up again over time (I think oil may have swelled the timber).

So, it's not entirely related to a tight lockup but resistance in the lock-up mechanism from another source.

A wooden block? I would like to see the photos.

I had mine all to pieces to adjust the spring tension on the safety. There was no wood in mine.

Another thing I will mention to the original poster: be sure to use proper lubricant on the hinge pin and locking bolts. This will make everything proper as the rifle wears in. Of course, proper lubricant is essential to any hinged weapon.

I checked my Photobucket account but don't have the photos there, yet.

I'll have a look and up load the relevant photos this evening from my home computer.

Bear in mind that my is not a model 140-2-1 - maybe this is one of the differences?

You wouldn't want to buy a double rifle with the mechanism loose when new; it only has one way to go and that is to loosen up. it is normal; shoot it.

The lighter coloured timber insert looks like it may have been put in to provide resistance to the locking block movement? But then again, it also rubs on the timber either side of the insert:

Mauserand9mm, those are some disturbing pictures! However they don't look anything like any of my Merkel doubles!

I´m not an educated gunsmith but in my eyes it looks like there is no wooden part which move. IMO the moving part (rear and forward) is that steel piece which the red arrow points. And it looks like it do not have enough space to move such way it shoult to....

You need a competent stock maker to solve yours problem.

Yes, the steel part that moves also has the locking lugs on it (at the front but not shown in the pictures). You can see the mark on the timber piece where the metal part moves to and it extends beyond where the oil ridge/build-up is shown. I'll try and get a video of it but am pushed at the moment to find the time to do so.

Isn't always amazing how the close up photos always show up the fluff, oil , dirt and grease etc. I'm not having a go at you just making the observation. I recently took photos of a rifle I was selling, that I thought was clean and was surprised how all the "extras" that we don't seem to notice as we handle our pride and joy stand out like dogs balls when a photo is taken

Not, as you say having a go at anyone here either, but have to comment from the phots the quality of wood in that rifle seems less than perfect..

The detail that comes up is amazing. I took a photo of a small, baby (?), expired gecko that was only about 1cm long and it looks like some sort of prehistoric beast:

I don't think my Merkel timber looks too bad at a distance:

It´s hard to say but some european hard wallnut timbers are very pale untill they will dyed properly with suitable toned stain. I have done it many times.

G'day Mauser and 9mm. That is certainly nice timber on your Merkel. Mine is plainer but still quite attractive. I note you still have the original recoil pad on it- I changed mine out after the first range session- those pads are pretty rough on the shoulder!

My experience as well..it's more a factor of the drop of the stock IMHO..

Still a very nice looking double...

I'm lucky the way the rifle fits, in particular where the pad sits in my shoulder. The top of the pad is a hard plastic (to protect the soft rubber from damage when it is standing in the rack I guess) but it doesn't contact my shoulder. Does this mean that the "drop of the stock" suits me?

If it works run with it! I have a long length of pull so had mine extended by an inch with spacers followed by a ' kick eeze' sorbethane recoil pad. Fits perfectly now!
