Is it possible ?
      #243054 - 26/02/14 08:00 AM

Hello everyone. I now have the opportunity to buy a nice Belgian FN Mauser M98 in cal. 8x68s! Is the lock case large enough to build the 350 Rigby?

I'm not sure what you mean by "lock case"? The picture compares a Norma 8x68s round with a Kynoch 350 Rigby Magnum. Hope this helps.

Do you think there is enough space for 350 Rigby in the UN M98 action ?

8x68 do not need magnum action so if you look foto above you could do yours own conclusions.

Lock-case is probably the box magazine!

"Lock-case" was unfortunately only a direct translation on Google, sorry about my bad English

What I meant was the bolt action ... Now it turns out that the UN M98 is not a magnum action, but a standard action with modifications.

I'd rather wait until it pops up a Oberndorf M98.

Belgian FN Mauser M98 action, especially if a civil version, is one of those best ever made so if you could buy such one cheap, keep going.

The rifle and caliber are good even for africa game so you do not need to convert it to .350 Rigby. I have one similar action waiting for 7x64 barrel.

The 8x68S was apparently designed to fit into a standard Mauser M98 action.
Magazine length of the standard German M98 action is ca. 84 mm. One of mine, mod. 1909 for Argentine, measured 83.6 mm.
Modern CIP L6 / max. cartridge length of the 8x68S is 87 mm.

I have read that the magazine length of late commercial Belgian FN actions is a bit longer, around 86 mm, but never measured one of these. Also can't say what "late" means. Anyway, this will fit just fine for the 8x68S.

Length of a Mauser magnum magazine is around 96 mm.
This action was originally used for the Rigby cartridges.
CIP L6 for the .350 Rigby Mag. is 90.8 mm.
I do not know the dimensions of factory ammunition. You have to do some measuring and then decide.
With handloading this will be no problem, as you can adjust the cartridge length by yourself.

If the bore of this rifle is still good, and if it has the correct twist length for the 8x68S (280 mm instead of the normal 240 mm for 8x57IS etc.), then I would happily keep it as it is!
