Well you must be lucky. In canada you have to order it. Even 8mm Mauser or 7x57 can be a pain to find and it is three times the price of 308,30-06-270 etc.

And I wish people would loose the metric designations for most Mauser cartridges. They are actually whitworth sizes, as are the actions.

9.3 is .366 or "R"
.275 is "P"

All of these calibers predate the frigging conversion to metric by decades.

Rigby had this figured out, hence the 275 rigby.

Prvi partisan load 9.3x62, it's cheap.

But as you said, you're not after metric.. If its only an 8x57, how about a .358 Winchester? Very efficient, and quietly chugging along despite not much attention.

Rigby just whacked it's name on it to sell rifles by them, in a cartridge named by them. At least that's how I view. I like to say 7x57 to people when they talk about the .275 rigby to annoy them

I think is funny that most gun guys don't know that a mauser is not metric. It is whitworth. And the barrel diameters are in the old letter designation sizes. 9.3 is actually "U"

Do you mean that Paul Mauser used english measure unit when he developed caliber 7x57 ?

Yup it is the old English measure of drill system in letters. "P" if I recall off hand. The whole Mauser is built in whitworth. There isn't one metric part on it.

Probably stems from the fact that the machinery used to drill the barrel would not have had any metric bits available in 1898.

Look at a good tap drill chart it is funny as shit. All the "metric" calibers are letter designation sizes. And most of the old time calibers as well. .404, .375. .275

All the screws and threads on a Mauser action are inch measure sizes as well. Some odd ball like the two main action screws which are 1/4" 22tpi.

Ya that kind of got lost didn't it. I asked for opinions on a good North American cartridge, and got a bunch of bull of the great metric shells you can't get here unless you wanna pay $80 per box, when you can find them. Seems dumb to me.
