Anderson Wheeler in 577NE or 600NE
      #242457 - 15/02/14 07:51 PM

Hi

Andersoon Wheeler offers 2models of double rifles

A sidelock model that starts at 42 000 british punds

And a PH model in boxlock, similar to the one in james bond, and it starts at 15 000 punds

now 15 000punds from 375-500NE is cheap. but you can also get the 577-600 in the field model

and most often a 577NE and a 600NE is much moore expensive....

But!! it only cost 2000punds moore.

so you can get a New british double rifle inn 577NE and in 600NE for 17 000punds!!

Got the price from Anderson Wheeler this week.

So here is my question to you all, now that the the dream cost less =P

since i have a 500NE i would have to go for the might 600NE

Would you wish you'd gotten the 600?

I like the .577 - but with either choice it's just a number.
Big stomping number...

It's just a tarted up V-C rifle. Compare their prices to A-W.
IMO hardly a new British Rifle. Just finished there.

As for the chambering, I would go for a .600 NE if I had a .500 NE already. That little bit extra.

As I have a .450 NE, I might consider a .577 NE myself, but still might be tempted by a .600.

One consideration, is make sure you can handle the recoil. I would guess you have experience in firing both. If I was buying for myself, and wanted a user rifle, ie one to actually use on elephants, I would try them out again (if possible) and give real consideration as to recoil recovery for the second shot. I think the .577 NE would win that battle. The .600 NE of course wins the "knock down" battle at both ends.

A .600 NE would be cool .... tough decision.

And you can't overlook that big, blunt nose of a .600 Nitro FMJ.

Personally, if i was looking for 2nd hand i'd go .577, but buying new, if theyre the same price..well..thats a hell of a decision to put on yourself which way to go!

I don't know.

A couple of years ago I beat the crap out of myself trying different loads in a friends 577 2.75" BPE to see what it liked.
28 round over a period of about 4.5 hours. Shot over a rest at a bench, but on my knees to enable the gun to recoil and torque.
Got home and got out a couple of bottles of Windhoek (hhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Windhoek lager) and noticed that I had the tremors when trying to use the bottle opener.

That was only (only ?) with a .577 BPE. I don't know if I could own a .600 Nitro. I'd stand in line all day to fire one, but how many times, I don't know.

A 500 is big enough, the remainder is merely "compensation"...

Owning a 577 & 600 I can't tell the difference in recoil shooting at paper or game. 600 would be my choice. Try to get serial number with last digits 600.

28 rounds in 4 1/2 hours from a bench - you're a mad man.

I'd love to get one in my hands just to see what they are like, but own one? Only if it was given to me and then there would be no way you'd get me to pull the trigger.. I'm sure there are more fun ways of having the shit beaten out of one's self.

Gents:
Recoil should not be a factor if the rifle's weight is proper. Using math calculations for felt recoil, a .600 at 15.5 pounds will feel the same as a .577 at 12 pounds and the same as a .500 at 10.5 pounds. Approximately, of course, and I know there are many factors as stock dimensions, etc. But, generally speaking, rifle weight make up most of the calculation.

The A-W rifles are very nicely done and will have a page in my new book on double rifles. The side lock rifle is priced higher as I believe it is English made where the box lock is made using a French Verney-Caron action and maybe barrels. V-C are fine rifles but cost far less to produce than a London made double rifle.

.577 vs. .600. I've owned both and still have my .600 Wilkes (sold the Jeffery). They are cool and have a great "wow" factor, but I doubt anything over the .450-.470 class is really needed for big game. That said, it's not what you need, but what you want. That is why I shoot the big rifles often but hunt with a .450-400.

Cheers, gents.
Cal

Thats a difficult choice ,if you buy one you might later wish you had bought the other ,the 577 maybe being the more usable[lighter weight] ,the 600 being ,you only live once ,so take the 600 ! There is a photo of a 10 bore double rifle owned by one of the Nizam of Hyperadad in Graham Wrights 2nd Edition ,thats an interesting story about the last Nizam who bought a sheep farm near Perth, was bad at managing money, drove like a maniac ,was constantly being sued by parasites ,lost all his wealth and was a book written about him !

Well said, Cal.

May i ask why you sold the Jeffery and kept the Wilkes (what factors etc, details of both rifle?).
