An early Alex. Henry in England
      #242423 - 15/02/14 05:13 AM

Hi Guys

Just a couple of days ago a rather nice cased Alex Henry double was sold at a regional auction here in England.

The description was:

"A superb quality cased .450 cal x 3.25" double barrelled sidelock rifle. Serial number 59xx. By Alexander henry of Edinburgh and London. The browned rose twist barrels having fore and rear file cut. Ramped fore sight and dovetailed platinum lined rear sight to 200 yards. The action, signed locks, under lever and tang profusely engraved with best scroll foliage. The top of the standing breech engraved - 'Henry's No. 90 Patent' within an oval. Gold 'SAFE' highly figured walnut stock with cheek piece, engraved heel and toe plates. Chequered pistol grip with engraved hinged trap cover. The fore-end having engraved pivoted lever. In its original oak and leather case having embossed leather trade label. Accessories include bullet mould, capper/ decapper and turn screws etc. The rifle Grade ! retaining virtually all original finish. Brls. 28 inches."

Sorry no photos that I can download, but in the thumbhails it looks good. The case is all lined in bright red felt. The underlever looks to be the usual Jones underlever.

A friend was unsuccessful in bidding for it. It sold for £9,200 plus the usual charges, which would convert to US$ 19,000 or AUS$ 21,000 in round terms. Plus shipping of course...

Interesting though!

There is no indication if this is a Black Powder Express, or a Nitro Express, this can make a huge difference in price.

As the description is "brown twist barrels", it is a bpe.
