Who is Steve Early?

Check out steveearleproducts.com. Can you identify the spring?

It's a main spring for a sidelock.
I use them all the time in my work.

What lock exactly I can't say. The hook on the end means it goes to a tumbler with a stirrup in it.

That kind of set-up came out in the late flint period, but was common all through the cap-lock period and into the cartridge age. Most good double and single side lock rifles and shotguns have this type of spring even today.

I was thinking more along the lines of a hammer mainspring for a Gibbs style SS action. Very close resemblance to the pictures I have. One could only hope.

I dont think it belongs on a sidelock, as evidence by the shorter tab having a built in radius(think dual purpose mainspring/trigger spring)...And only early Gibbs falling block actions had a spring similar to the one pictured. Even then the gibbs spring had a little "shelf" on the lower arm(trigger spring). My guess is it belongs to a Holland & Woodward No. 3 action.

Hi Curl,

I've handled one in the flesh. I am very, very impressed. Turning one into a proper Scottish take-down rifle will be easy enough as Steve did such a good job. Provisions for Fraser's method of take-down can be utilized as well - something that was quite important to me. There is some ever-so-slight refinement to the shape of the safety and the lever needed which is simple enough. It's just a bit of rounding here and there to bring out more of those graceful Fraser lines. Steve Earle really did one hell of a job. I am so glad they're finally here.

StephenCoker,

Thanks for the report. Do you have one on your bench yet?

Did Glenn Fewless build one up? I didn't find his thread on AR. Glenn used to post on these forums also, but I haven't seen his presence here lately.

What is "AR"? Wouldn't it just be simpler to copy and paste the URL?

Very interested to see what Glen is up to these days, but I need some help using the decoder ring.

Exquisite work. I really like the manner of designating calibre, too. Quite lovely, indeed.

OK. That was enough of a clue for me to sleuth out that "AR" is shorthand for the Accurate Reloading forums. Thanks!

Apparently the software for this bulletin board (Nitroexpress) does some odd things when it processes domain names (the dot-com part) presumably to prevent spam. This prevents you from simply copying and pasting a URL in the usual manner (as done on most other web forums).

Here is a clickable link to the thread Link to Accurate Reloading discussion "New Fraser Action"
