Scope/mount ideas for a Ruger M77 .416 Rigby
      #24184 - 15/01/05 01:14 PM

Well, Fortune smiled on me and I acquired a Ruger in 416 Rigby.(somewhere south of $1000) This gun does not come with factory rings, so my question is what rings would you recommend? Are factory Ruger rings adequate for the job? Should I look at something from Leupold/Burris (or another maker)? I am even considering Warne Maxima's for the Ruger integral base, but I am opting to stay away from the Maxima QD's for this caliber For fear that they will QD during recoil
.
Also, what would be a suggestion for good scope? I am considering a Leupold VX-II,or III, as well as a Burris Safari series in the 1.5ish to 5ish power range. At this time my budget is sub $500, so I know I am limited to a 1" tube.
Thanks,
Jay J.

First of all, congrats on finding a 416 for under a grand. I've had one for a few years and went with DM for all my Rugers with the same Burris scope. I had a loopy on my first one and it died for some reason and promptly replaced it with a Burris that you are looking at. I basically gave my Ruger rings away whenever somebody needed a set so I can't send you a set. I like the easy change feature of DM's in case a scope has to come off for whatever reason. When I first started shooting it, I shot the hell out it with irons (Damn tiny bead front sight), and then did the same with the scope combo, practicing taking it off and on several times. All in all, the biggest pain in the ass is the expensive factory ammo, even buying new brass from Huntington's is pricey also. The only way you can range time is to reload, there is a bunch of data out there.

I've used the the Warne QR mounts on my .416 Ruger for several years now. I have the old type, with the single screws, and they have worked well and come back to zero every time. The new ones look to be even stronger as they have two screws above and below. If you plan to hunt dangerous game with this rifle I suggest you do three things: 1)Install a GOOD recoil pad,ie. Decellerater or Limb Saver, 2)Order the nice 3/32" front site replacement from N.E.C.G. Runs about $18, 3)Install a low power(1-4.5X or similar) scope with QD rings (ie. Warne or Talley). I feel you will be getting the maximum benefit per dollar spent with these changes.

I, too, used the Warne QDs on my Ruger 416 Rigby and had no problem whatsoever.

Thanks for the advise, and the feedback about the Warne QD's. The Limbsaver recoil pad was ordered the day after I purchased the gun

Hi,

I mounted a Leupold Veri-X III 1.5 X 5 in Warne QD (Ruger type) rings on my Ruger RSM 458 Lott and it is working fine, though I only have shot 40 rounds with it mounted. It returns to zero just fine when re-mounted and I don't think they will "QD" under recoil if tightened properly.

Also I replaced the front bead with the larger one in white from NECG as well as their (NECG) rear peep sight that mounts on the Ruger "dove tail". My old eyes can't see the stock Ruger rear sight, but the peep works great when the scope is off.

I would think a Leupold in 2 X 7 would be a good candidate for a 416 Rigby both in amount(s) of magnification and eye relief.

Hope that helps.

Roi

I agree that th 2-7 would also be a good choice especially since the .416 shoots as flat as 30/06 with the 340 gr bullets. I had a 2-7 on my cz and changed it out for a 2.5x comapct..........great little scope but I sometimes would like a little more power.

I used a VariX II 2X7 on my CZ 550 in 416 Rigby several years ago for a No. Tanzania buffalo hunt with some plains game and found it to be about perfect.

Even better IMHO is the VX III 2.5X8.

The true magnification of the VX II 2x7 is 2.5x6.6
The true magnification of the VX III 2.5x8 is 2.6x7.8
