Regarding a .22 RF extra long? I haven't heard of it.

There was .22 RF shorts.
The standard now .22 RF Long Rifle.
An inbetween .22 RF Long.

Left to right:
.22 short hv by Remington
.22lr by Eley
.22 CCI Stinger
.22 extra long by RWS, 20 mm copper case, probably pre-WW1
.22 WMR

You forgot the .22 WRF. Stands Winchester Rim Fire. It had the same case size as the WMR, but a bit shorter. It also shot an inside lubricated lead bullet, same "style" as modern cast bullets and at a velocity of 1,445fps.
As well there was an obscure oversized .22 Winchester "Auto", which had a case a little shorter than the long rifle, but also fatter. It shot, I think, the same bullet as the .22 WRF, but at about 1,050fps. IIRC, it was chambered in a Winchester Semi Auto rifle similar to the .405 and .351 centre fires.

Now thats nice !
You rarely see a modified bolt handle on a lee, a very handy stalking rifle in an excellent calibre.

B.S.A CO. FOR JOHN RIGBY & CO. A .303 (BRIT.) 'LEE-SPEED' BOLT-MAGAZINE SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 1121,
https://www.holtsauctioneers.com/asp/ful...086&image=7

B.S.A CO. FOR JOHN RIGBY & CO.
A .303 (BRIT.) 'LEE-SPEED' BOLT-MAGAZINE SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 1121,
for 1898, 24 1/2in. unsigned nitro reproved barrel (in 2024, barrel likely historic replacement), open rear sight with two folding leaf sights with white metal inlaid sight-lines, ramped bead fore-sight, the breech end numbered '5537', nocksform with stippled sighting flat, bolt dust cover with light border engraving and marked 'JOHN RIGBY & CO. 72 ST. JAMES'S ST. LONDON.', turned-down low-profile bolt handle, manual bolt-mounted safety, detachable magazine with border engraving, triggerguard numbered '1121', butt-stock collar marked 'LEE SPEED. PATENTS. B.S.A. CO. B1879.' and with border engraving, blued finish overall, figured pistolgrip stock (poor insert repair to toe) with horn pistolgrip-cap, 14in. pull including steel buttplate, fore-end with horn finial, sling eyes, weight 7lb. 7oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the records list the rifle as 'Lee Rigby Sporting Best', Sept. 27th 1898, .303, 26" barrel for H. Weld Blundell

'H. Weld Blundell' is likely to refer to Herbert Joseph Weld Blundell (1852-1935) a traveller, archaeologist, philanthropist and author.

His travels took him to initially to Persia in 1891 and he then spent ten years travelling and chronicling various expeditions in North Africa and East Africa, between 1894 and 1905. The purchase of the Rigby rifle corresponds with an expedition to Abyssinia he undertook in December 1898 with Lord Lovat, Reginald Koettlitz (late of the Jackson-Harmsworth Expedition) and Mr Harwood (naturalist). His subsequent chronicle 'A Journey Through Abyssinia to the Nile' was published in the Geographical Journal in February 1900.

During the Second Boer War, he acted briefly as correspondent for the Morning Post before continuing on his expeditions, the results of which lead to the establishing of the Weld Blundell collection in The Ashmolean museum

Given the history of its owner, one can assume the rifle has well and truely "been there, done that". Not just a fantastic rifle, but a piece of history from an age never to be repeated.

Given the look of it not sure that it has. Assuming it has been refinished at some stage. Its a very nice Speed.

I see the cocking piece has been machined for the Rigby peep sight. Will this one fit?

To me the cocking piece looked standard for a Lee Speed of its age. Clearly I still have a lot to learn. Could you explain what makes it look like its been machined for the Rigby peep sight?

The dovetail machined cut across the back of the cocking piece.

Sold for £3600.00 pounds! With auction fees and import fees to canada it would be about $9500.00 Canadian funds. Way out of my price range. Lee speeds seem to be going up in price quickly. 10 to 15 years ago that rifle would have sold for way under a £1000.00 pounds.

A few "sporterized" Long Lee rifles in that auction too.
If one wanted to build their own Lee Speed replica, that's the action to start with.

Now THAT'S a nice rifle, if going for under a grand. I wouldn't mind that one in the safe, but then, too many there I don't shoot, already.

I guess it depends on who is looking at the bore condition and what experience THEY have.
I bought a 9.3x57 from Tradeexcanada years ago for $275.00 CDN. The bore was listed as fair, dark, 'some" pitting.
After receiving the rifle, I cleaned the bore, something it looked like hadn't been done for years.
The bore was quite lovely, no pitting & not "dark". With my 3x9x40 Burris, it shot everything from 232 to 300gr. into an inch
or better at 100 meters. My bro now owns that rifle as his modern moose rifle, loaded with 286gr. Alaskan Norma RN's at 2,200fps.

Together with a BSA catalogue and pamplet of information about Lee Speed rifles."
