I will soon be in the possession of a .458 Mannlicher-Schoenauer , I do not know much of this type of rifle, since I am more of a Mauser action rifle man. Is this type of rifle more known in Europe, since in South Africa this type of rifle is not that common. I would really like your opinion regaring this matter.

Regards

Gert

The M-S is my favorite rifle, but does have one limitation--the split bridge. This limits not only scope mount options, but the bolt handle is forward of the trigger guard, AND THIS WILL SLOW DOWN RATE OF FIRE somewhat. You have to reach forward and backward between cycling the bolt and pulling the trigger, whereas with the Mauser, the bolt lies more directly above the trigger allowing the hand to drop quickly and naturally to the trigger. This only makes a difference IMHO with a dangerous game caliber where getting back into battery may value the extra second. Strong points are: five round controlled feed rotary magazine (but DO NOT close the bolt over a free floating round--it should be fed from the magazine and will eventually break the extractor), the magazine firmly holds each round to prevent deformation of bullet tips, the action is SMOOTH, and the bolt is field stripable without tools. The machining is magnificent. The weight reflects the metal in the gun. Balance and handling are excellent. If you decide against it, it will be easy to sell. Steve
