Need Type A Barrel Dimensions
      #239902 - 31/12/13 04:58 AM

Hi, I want to make a 9.3x62 Mauser barrel, like used on the Type A, and with the configuration in the picture. I have dimensions for barrels that do not have the extra step in front of the rear sight base; they seem to be .900 diameter just in front of the rear sight. If anyone has one of this type with the double step, I would appreciate it if you could please give me some measurements of that area. Thanks in advance for any help. I have the Lothar Walther dimensions but I do not know what caliber rifle it came from, and I have the drawing from Speed's book; that is for up to 9mm.
Picture does not show up from photobucket; I can't fathom why.

Welcome to Nitro Express!

I have a TypeA 10.75X68 which I can measure but it may not be the right dimension for you.

There are a couple 9.3mm TypeAs owned by some members here.
Do a search and send a PM to them. The ones that come to mind are Osa Johnson's rifle and another sister rifle to that one.

I did PM the owner of the OJ rifle; no response. Yes, if your rifle has the second step, I would definitely like to have the diameter of the barrel right in front of the step, and the step itself, and the sight base. thanks. The dimensions I have are from AR members, but those do not have the step; barrel at the front of the rear sight base starts its taper from there.

Here is my rifle:

The sight band is .985"
The step is .900"
And the barrel in front of the step is .854"

These measurements were taken in the stock but I think are pretty accurate.

That is very pretty; and thanks for the information. You are a gentleman and a scholar.
Now I would like to get those same measurements from a 9.3x62 rifle.

You are very welcome.
One thing I did just notice for the first time is that the cylindrical section of the barrel (in this case the .900" section) is the same on my TypeA and TypeB 10.75mm rifles. The rear sight on the B is shorter though so the stepped section is longer out in front of the sight band.
My supposition is that the barrels were turned the same for both and the differing sight bands used were either A or B type rifles.

Are there photos of the complete rifle on the site anywhere?

There is no difference at all.

The outer diameter of the rear base sleeve is in both rifles (10,75 and 9,3x62) 25,04 mm(ca 0.986).
Wall thickness of that sleeve round about 1mm .
So the corresponding barrel diameter on that portion is 23 mm (0.905 ).

The barrel diameter starts with 21,8 mm (0.859 ).

Taper differs (different muzzle diameter) 10,75 round about 17 mm.
9,3x62 : straight on the muzzle 14,5 mm and where sleeve of the frontsight ends(28mm back from the muzzle) 15 mm .

So if you want to copy the Osa rifle you have to choose a barrel shank diameter of 29 mm , length 36,8/37 mm.

Your "second" step ends 144,4 mm apart from the front receiver ring.

Set back the rear sight sleeve 4mm from that step ( and be assured that all backsight sleeves of the A Type have a nominal length of 80 mm = starting from the Kurz Type A Mausers up to the .404=).

Set it flush with the step and you have the other version not so liked by you but also very common.

Measurements taken from a Type A 9,3x62 (1932).

Have in mind that measurements from real pieces may differ slightly because of the minor differences in the finishing process , that was a handjob in those days.

Thanks very much for the info, Curious. The info you gave will be most helpful to me. I do have data from two other 9.3s (one from Germany) that do not have the step, and the barrel just starts tapering directly from the rear sight base and is .9 there. I like the step version better. So I will use the dimensions you gave. I have actually made these before but I basically guessed at the dimensions. One note is that all German military Mausers also use a .900 diameter for the rear sight base, so that must be a magic number.
Thanks. Happy New Year.

I own the Osa Johnson sister rifle in 9.3x62 (Charles A. Heyer & Co. Nairobi) platinum on the barrel top like the Johnson rifle and 1 serial number off hers, otherwise identical. If you still need the dimensions I can measure it tomorrow if you would like. She has the stepped barrel in front of the type A express sight like you would like to reproduce. She is a real beauty.

Wow, that would be fantastic if you could measure it and verify the dimensions provided by Justcurious. I assume they will be the same. Thanks very much,

HMMM; your barrel is quite a bit lighter than Just curious's. I don't understand your "under the sight base" dimension; That .990 should be about the OD of a sight base. And is the muzzle diameter 14.5mm like his? 15mm just behind the front sight band.
Thanks very much; all this information is very helpful; I was ready to cut metal today but I decided to wait for your info.

The od of the sight base is .990", justcurious's is .986 as he stated, the barrel dia. just behind the
front sight band is .585" or just about 15mm. Just so you know my rifle is original unrestored condition original wood and metal finsh.

Also double checked the barrel dia. just in front of the step, and it definitely is .801" and of course tapers down from there toward the muzzle to the .585" behind the sight band.
