416 Remington Ultra-mag

I have bumped into several articles in the past year mentioning this wildcat..it was even mentioned in Noslers new reloading manual in the info on the 338 Ultra-mag..

Not sure how much more it can really do than the .416 Rem I currently have...but interesting to read the articles by those who have a rifle chambered to this round. Per the information I have read it seems it is very similar to the 416 Dakota..

Here is a an Alaskan hunters post from another website who apparently has one:

If you do your own loading, the wildcat 416 Remington Ultra Mag is a great round. It outperforms all the 416's exept the 416 WBY Mag. It fits any long action, and is an easy neck up from 375 RUM brass. I got my dies from Redding. My rifle is a Winchester 70 that was originally chambered in 300 RUM. It has a 22" Lilja #6 barrel. I am getting a measured velocity of 2550 FPS with 400gr Barnes Triple Shocks using RL 15 powder. This is not a maxed out load at all, and very reliable, shooting about .75" - 1.00" consistantly at 100 yards. Kevin Weaver of Weaver Rifles out of Peyton CO built the rifle. I have the twin to this rifle chambered in 375 RUM (with a #3 Lilja) shooting 300gr Noslers at 2800 FPS that is a lot more unconfortable to shoot. Anyways if you are a 416 fan, the 416 RUM is a great round to think about, something differant that not everybody has.

I have not taken a brown bear or moose with it yet, but it has plenty of horsepower to get the job done on either animal, hopefully in 2012 I will be uisng it on the pennisula for brown bears. That is the next season I can hunt due to the one bear every four year management area.


I find this very interesting as I have and have used the 300, 338 and 375 RUM's ..all with excellets results and all very accurate..the performance on elk size game is devastating...

Ripp a 416 Rem Ultra Mag is very close to necking a 404 case down to 416. The Weatherby and Rigby (loaded up) will out perform it but why bother. Same neck the 300Ultra mag to 404 and you pretty much have a 404Jeffery.

I am thinking about necking a 338RUM up to 358. I think if I was going down the 416 route again I would go with the 416RUM. Slightly cheaper brass and easier to get an action to fit than a Rigby, then again maybe not.

I built a 416 Ultra on a Olympic Arms BBK several years ago. Fed perfectly. Simply the 375 Ultra case necked up to 416. The rifle is now somewhere in Alaska. I have the reamer and about 500 each 375 Ultra cases, maybe I should build another, but have the 416 Rigby bug now.

PS, one of the better things I did way back when cases were available was to buy a lot of brass, including the 375 Ultra brass. It was cheap back then!

I currently have several rifles in 416 Rem. Have used one quite a bit in Africa and really like it..up to this time see no reason for more velocity or power and it is very accurate to boot..

The reason this caught my attention is that I currently have the 300, 338 and 375 RUM's so figure one more would be the complete set... plus I really like them..feel the RUM's provide the little extra needed at times on the longer shots on bigger game such as elk.

As to brass, I agree..actually picked up 500 new 416Rem cases before all this started....

The reamer and cartridges below. This may be the first 416 Ultra reamer made. I had it ground by Pacific Tool and Gauge several years ago.

Neat. A tiny brother to .416Rigby. Funny how the Remington folks hadn't thought of that One. Maybe even a .458RUM ?.

458 Ultra wold just about duplicate the 460 G&A. I formed several 458 Ultra cartridges back when I was building the 416 Ultra rifle, but never ordered a reamer.

The 416 Ultra fits more actions than the Rigby. And has a case capacity advantage over the 416 Rem.
