Stalking cats

I've just finished reading JH Patterson's 'Man Eaters of Tsavo' - great book. As well as using traps and shooting over baits (live human ones!), the author describes what amounts to stalking lion in open country. The book was first published in 1907, but I was just wondering: Is it possible to hunt big cats in this way today and does anyone do it?

Honey Badger,
I've seen the movie and I've read a piece about the lions of Tsavo in a book by Capstick called "Death in the long grass"(by the way I think you'll enjoy this book so try and get it)No,I don't think they still hunt them in the same way(talking only about man eaters).Usually today a man-eater goes down before his 5th victim.

But in the wild cats are hunted from baits especially leopard. This bait is their natural food `and not humans allthough I think we'll get some nice lions if we use old Bob M.

So thats that.

I think BF is mainly talking about stalking maneaters.

Stalking cats can certainly be done. Leopards are reportedly rarely taken this way, usually hunted over baits as BF says, or with the use of hounds.

However one of the great hunting experiences of today is the stalk and follow up of lions. I think usually in Southern Africa baiting is more common as with Tanzania, but stalking/tracking hunts will still occur. In the Central African Republic one of the great hunts is the track and stalking of lions. Vehicle tracks and waterholes are checked in the morning for lion spoor and when suitable tracks are found the trackers, PH and client will follow the tracks often for many hours and kilometres. It is supposedly common that when the hunters find the hunted lion charges will result as if the lion is feeling harassed it doesn't put him in a favourable disposition.

When I win lotto this is one of the first hunts I will book.

Hi BigFive,

*Please*, just make sure those "nice lions" have a good bite on "the bait" before you interrupt their dinner!
This would make quite some people down' Zambesi way happy!

Cheers,
