Rabies around the world, a mouth-watering subject
      #23792 - 09/01/05 04:52 PM

I was just curious how much of an issue rabies is in the outback, and what if any succesful measures have been taken to prevent it. Here in the middle Atlantic states of the USA its quite a problem, the urban legend is that the epidemic was caused by racoon hunters who unknowingly brought up infected wild racoons for hunting from Florida and turned them loose. I think it might be true but irregardless its a nightmare, racoons, foxes, possums, squirrels, stray cats, beavers (yes, LOTS of beavers seem to get it), bats, just about any mammal that likes to fight or gets picked on. (I hear divorce lawyers and anti-gun activists also exhibit the symptoms from time-to-time as well, but not much research has been done on them; as all the other above mentioned mammals tend to be both better liked and more rational.)

One thing thats worked well here is dropping racoon food bait which has been laced with rabies vaccine, since they've been doing it the numbers have been dropping. Just wondering what the situation is like in the rest of the world.

We don't have rabies in Oz, at this time. However, it's endemic in countries not far north of us, so we keep an eye out for outbreaks!

We almost certainly DO have endemic rabies in northern Australia, in our fruit-bats, or flying foxes. The authorities will not admit it to the public, but the 'mad bat' virus is genetically indistinguishable from rabies, therefore, it IS rabies.

My mum was scratched buy a bat awhile ago whilst visiting us in Katherine. We rushed her to hospital and she recived a course of injections. I've done a bit of research on the virus and here's some of what I've found out-

Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABL) has been found in several species of flying fox and bats. Six types of lyssavirus are recognised through out the world, the most well known lyssavirus is rabies, which is closely related to ABL. There have been two deaths from ABL in Australia.

ABL is transmitted to humans via bites and scratches that provide direct access of the virus, in bat saliva, to breaks in the skin. The virus cannot survive more than a few hours outside the bat. Bat urine, faeces or blood does not spread ABL.

Bakes:
The contention that ABL is genetically indistinguishable from rabies is relatively new, my understanding is that it has only come to light in the last year. This info is from a research staff member at CDU, on the QT.

Did your Mum show any symptoms, or were the injections precautionary?

The bats here are a problem too. Normally they'll quarantine the biting animal before giving you injections, if its possible, which of course it isn't with a bat. I remember as a kid, when we were still in the old "sixteen needles in the stomach" days of treatment, we country children were very wary of bats, you never stood around streetlights and such at night (thats where the bats were, looking for bugs). We didn't care about getting rabies, we were kids, we just didn't want the damn shots!

Not surprised to hear a government health ministry doesn't like to admit to the problem, they do the same type of thing here whenever someone comes down with West Nile Virus. A friend of mine got it from a mosquito bite, even remembered when he got bit, and all he heard from the Health Department was "now you travelled somewhere recently right? You must have? Are you SURE you didn't travel? Somewhere? Anywhere? You COULDN'T have caught this here, now. "

Damn do-gooders!

Marrakai,

Rabies is very nearly 100% fatal once one is symptomatic. From what I hear of people who survive a true rabies infection, death may be a blessing. Precautionary injections initiated immediately after a possible infection is the only rational course of action when bitten or scratched by an unknown animal.

Best,

JohnTheGreek
