Rifle weights
      #237534 - 08/11/13 12:27 AM

Hi All,

I seem to remember that in days gone by,the British manufacturers had a formula
to work out the weights for each calibre of double rifle.
I think it has something to do with bullet weight times by x amount = rifle weight, but I'm not certain.
I dont suppose someone out there knows what it is?

Many thanks

Mark

In shotguns Manton laid down the formula that the gun weighs 96 times the load it fires. Is that what you had in mind?

That is the one.I knew it was something like that.
I'm almost sure it works for double rifles aswell.
Thankyou very much

I hope not old mate!
570gn x 96 = 54720gn
Divide result by 7000 to get to pounds = 7.8lbs
Sorry mate but I'm not going to fire a 8lbs 500NE!
Extrapolate backwards from 10lbs - gives a factor of approx 123.

Shotguns shoot their loads at a virtually uniform 1100 fps. British double rifles of the .450 NE, .470 NE, .450 #2NE, .475 NE class at the turn of the XX Century featured 500 grain bulletw at velocities of around 2150 fps. One and an eighth ounces of shot weighs almost exactly 500 grains. Doubling the velocity, while leaving the other variables the same results in four times the recoil, since recoil varies with the square of the recoil velocity.

The formula for shotguns, i.e. shot wieght in ounces x 96 = minimun gun weight to handle the recoil of a couple of hundred rounds during a days driven shooting.
A heavy recoiling, large caliber rifle is normally not fired more than a few shots per day while hunting. (Unless you live down under and shoot swine with a 577!).
A 6 pound shotgun firing an 1 1/8 oz shot load at 1100 fps will have approximately 1/2 the recoil of a 12 pound rifle firing a 500 grain bullet at 2150 fps.

Iowa, not sure about your latter statement, I go on bird shoots in the UK and shoot 2 0r 300 cartridges through my shotgun of the load you mention with no reaction, not in a million years would I shoot 300 rounds of .500 NE in a day ! best, Mike

Mike, thats what i'm saying.
With the big rifles a few shots a day at most would be fired.
