Mauser 66 question
      #237351 - 01/11/13 08:17 AM

I recently saw an extra barrel for a Mauser 66 for sale in caliber 9.3X64, which has a 12.60mm rim. My rifle is set up for the 8X68S, whose rim measures exactly 13mm.

I am wondering if the .40mm (.157") difference in the size of the rim of the two cartridges is small enough to allow a barrel in caliber 9.3X64 to be used in my action, Does anyone know how critical this dimension might be? The other interchangeable barrel I have for this rifle is in 7X66 SE vom Hofe, but its rim size is exactly the same as that of the 8X68S, so it offers no clue to the answer to my question.

According to Mauser`s own manual it seems that 9,3x64 has own caliber group without any interchangeability. The only another ammo with same base diameter in my knowledge is 7,5x55 Swiss.

According to my calculation .4 of a mm = .0157 of an inch...Which would not be worth worrying about..Sure the extractor would engage ok

4mm = .157"

Cheers

Spinna,

That agrees with my calculations. Moreover, the difference in extractor engagement would be only half that amount, or .0078, which is probably within tolerance limitations for the cartridge manufacturer.

I suppose I could resize a 9.3X64 case in my 8X68S sizing die and load a dummy round with it to see how well it extracts.

I don't know that it won't, but I'd rather not spend the money for a 9.3X64 barrel and then find out that it doesn't work.

On later reflection, rather than resizing a 9.3X64 case (which I have only a few of), I think I'll turn the rim on an 8X68S case down to 9.3X64 size and see how it works.
