double rifle use in the rain
      #23722 - 08/01/05 03:52 PM

As I sat here today listening to he seemingly inceasant rain, I began wondering how many of you carry your doubles hunting in the rain. I mean rain that is steady or occasional but heavy.

If one was on a traveling type hunt, you don't have a choice; you just use what you have. I generally hunt locally; and being something of a "gunbug", I have several rifles to choose from. I generally use a synthetic stocked mauser sporter with a teflon-like finish or a McMillian Safari Talon in dark colored stainless steel when it is rainy.

Now, I use a wax on the metal and wood of my double. I have not taken off the wood and sealed the end grain. I think this might be a good idea. What other techniques do you use to protect your double in rainy weather?

I own guns to use them, and they go out in the rain and mud, they get scratched, and the stocks get dinged. For me it's not a lot of fun to have a gun at home in the safe or being worried about wear and tear. My double has been rained on, scratched, and covered with dust. And it will be again.

On the metal I use a white gun grease (forgot the name at the moment). On wood repeatedly rained on, depending on the original finish, I touch up with a light amount of linspeed oil. That is not compatible with all stock finishes, however.

500grains,
I have a number of firearms; they are of varied types. I do not have any that I would not use/fire. I may have imagined a tone in your post that was unintended; if so, let me apologize.

I hunt and use many firearms for recreation. They show honest wear. When going to the range or on a hunt, I do not drag them behind the truck. I am sure that while you use your guns, you also maintain them. Preventive maint. is what I was referring to in my post. You. sir, did not answer the question.

seroadglide,

I was hunting with Marrakai in Darwin, both carrying doubles and it poured with rain,
however both guns were fine afterwards. I coat my guns with a combination of Wool Fat
and Petroleum Grease (I heat the up together in a Saucepan and then pour them into
film cannisters so I can take it with me).

Like the others, I own guns to use them, however I did buy a Merkel 470 to make sure
that I had one double that I could use and it wouldn't worry me if it got damaged by
rain or I really did take it into a swamp (I can be rough on hunting guns).

However last week I carried an Old Brno 603 in 375H&H and a Stainless Steel Ruger in 338
when it rained for 3 days straight as we knew we had absolutely no way of keeping the guns
dry. Even then it rained that hard that the Brno 602 stock got saturated and needed to be well dried
afterwards. In this case I was sensible not taking my double but it is unusual for me not to carry one.

You have reminded me to check the seals on my Brno's

Hope this helps.

One of my doubles spent three days underwater when the previous owners home was flooded while he was away. He dried it out thoroughly and I bought it some months later. Some rust broke out near the wood a few weeks after I bought it, so I pulled it down, boiled then greased the metal work and let the stock dry for another three months in a temperature controlled dehumidified container, no problems since.

So, I don't think a hunt in the rain will hurt. On the other hand, I'm reluctant to take any non stainless rifle out in heavy rain if I'm camping because it is hard to get them really dry in a hike tent. I have a stainless Ruger 308 that I use.

Any double that gets properly wet when hunting in the rain needs to be stripped down ASAP IMO, dried out, and all internal parts recoated with whatever rust preventative/lube you use.

Water enters the action quite easily at the safety catch slide, and where the triggers pass through the trigger plate.
The fore-end is also an area for concern especially with ejector guns.

Rust can form on lock parts and because they are hidden from view you may never know untill it is too late unless the gun is serviced after being used in rain.

This servicing is beyond the ability of many owners and in this case the gun needs to be given to a reputable doubles gunsmith for the job.

Doesn't or Didn't Searcy make a Stailess Steel Double with a composite stock?

I know Searcy did some doubles in stainless with walnut but not sure about the composite stock.

Yes, he did. I know where one is for sale if you're interested...

Ugly as sin, but undoubtedly effective against the elements.
