500 Boswell
      #23721 - 08/01/05 03:46 PM

A friend mailed this picture to me of a 500 Boswell. This is a rifle owned by a friend of his and was purchased by the Grandfather.

Did Boswell use this type of Indian engraving?

Estimated worth? Asking US20k / original case.

mickey,

Photo of the Third Bite (if it has one), any initials on the barrels
and year made would help.

Looks very like the W J Jeffrey's (ie Leonard) built guns but would need
more photos to know for sure.

I have found all of the big calibre English guns are all good, well made solid guns.

Not one of my 500's was made by the name on the action !!!!

Estimate of US20K would be conservative, especially snce that gun looks
in reasonable condition (as much can be seem from the photo and not knowing
bore condition).

Hope this helps.

500

Here is a picture of the top. You can just make out a Dolls Head. These pics are from the owners. the case says Boswell but the rifle engraving does look Indian to me.

I need more information.

mickey,

Thanks for the 2nd photo. In my database of photos I had a selection of photos of
an almost identical Boswell that was in Australia 2 years ago (Only engraving different -
Elephant one side, Lion the other.

I would say it is a generic Birmingham action (that's NOT meant as a derogitory (sp?) comment)
In my opinion, the engraving was not done in India but the UK. Like the W J Jeffrey's which
had (as we call them) "Birmingham pussy cats" - the tigers with the flat noses !!!.

I have an identical 500 Nitro by Watson Bros - the only diff being that my has full scroll enrgaving
over the whole gun instad of the animals either side inserted between the engraving. Apart from that,
I have just done an analysis of both photos and they are identical guns. I know mine was made in
Birmingham as it too closely resembles other doubles I own, have owned, seen, shot etc etc.

They are very nice, solid guns of generally very good build quality so if you get the chance to pick it
up I would. 500's seem to be one of the least available of the popular calibres and the differenc on
big game between a 470 et al and a 500 is significant.

Anyway, hope this helps. Email me if you want.
