Some one once told me that a double rifle did not have enough accuracy for hunting deer. Does this mean that I have to dispose of all three of my double rifles?

More seriously, this guy apparently really believed that anything short of bench rest accuracy was not enough. This was in Michigan where most of the deer hunting is done in the woods.

Isn't in Michigan where they hunt more than deer during deer season?

I know there are a few people on here who hunt deer with their doubles. I'll let them respond. I have no problem taking my .500 with me during deer season, but knowing me I'll get bored and start taking target practice shots and deer hunting will go right out the window!

Every endeavor has amongst it's members those that engage their mouth far before engaging their brain. We in the shooting sports are fortunate enough to be generously endowed with their numbers.

The only passion in life more generously endowed is that of politics.

I hunt deer with my double rifles and feel they are fully adequate to the task. In fact, the last deer I killed was with a double .300 across a harvested corn field. One shot through the heart at a measured 265 yards. My .300 sports a 1.5-5 scope and will put four shots - 2 rights and 2 lefts, into 1 1/4" at 100 yards, every time.

That's good enough accuracy in Virginia. I don't know what a deer hunter might need in Michigan!

I ain't throwing my DR's away, neither.

Cheers,

Here in OZ, a very well known gun writer made the comment in a magazine many years ago that "he had never seen a double that was capable of putting a shot from each barrel into a target the size of a dinner plate at 100 yards!"

I remember thinking at the time that, in that case he had not seen many doubles then!

unspellable,

ONe of my 450/400 doubles is accurate to 300 yards.
It was used by the previous owner to shoot a Camel in the hip with the
300 yard sight up to stop it running away.
I have also pulled off some 100 - 150 yard off hand running shots on pigs
that were also running away after brassing up the mob.

Yes ,I,m am an extreme expert on double rifles so dont listen to any of these pretenders on the board. The 3 doubles you have are no good for anything ,so you should give them away. If you like ,I will pay for any postage and fees incured to take them off your hands and save you the hastle of having them. I will send you a postal address.
BTW if any of them are terrible old British doubles they could be dangerous so I would definitley give them to me for safe keeping.

cr500

You have me worried about the "terrible old British doubles that could be dangerous".
I think I better get rid of them so I don't hurt myself. That last Buffalo charge I copped
must have rattled my nerves abit so I better let them go !!!

What address do I send them to ?

500, cr won't be able to handle and dispose of that many of those dangerous rifles. Sooooo, as a kind gesture, please go ahead and send them to me instead. Wouldn't want to overload good ole' cr.
