WW Greener .577 Nitro Express
      #235675 - 16/09/13 03:39 AM

When back at home in the UK over the summer I visited the "CLA Game Fair" (this year at Ragley Hall Worcestershire). A recommended event if you get the chance. 5 miles from home so a visit was in order. Trolling up and down "Gunmakers Row" there "she" was in one of the stands. What looked like a pristine .577 NE W W Greener, cased with accessories (Chained into the case) For sale for at about 10K (GBP)

I just keep thinking about her (it's been 2 months now!!)

Did I miss a steal? Should I have liberated her?

Please help.......

(BTW I have justifiable no need for a calibre greater than 8mm but that's irrelevant right?)

Ade

Depending on condition and all the other variables.. YES
Are you sure that it wasn't a 577 BPE?
10K GBP = almost $15,900USD.

Who can rightfully say they have never agonised over a potential deal, only to be beaten by someone else who laid his money down first - only to hear later that they missed out on a deal of a lifetime!
Happens to us all!
Sorry old mate I have no idea the cost of doubles are especially a .577, but if you can afford it & it doesn't appear over priced - go for it!
Otherwise you'll regret it!
Cheers

8x57- I recently purchased a .577 Greener Empire locally. I was fortunate enough to be able to shoot it before purchase. Other than being intimidated by the size of the rounds I was pretty much gone from the moment I picked the Greener up. Test fired and purchased. I havnt looked back.
It has performed very well for me on several trips with some nice game being taken with it. Im also enjoying loading for the Light Nitro.
Had approval from the minister of finance before, test shooting. Made the decision much easier. No regrets here.
Cheers Mick

Ade - Hammer/Hammerless/boxlock/sidelock/ejector? BPE/Nitro/case length?

Can you remember the name of the dealer? Some UK dealers are 10-20% over others - is it still available?

If cased, hammerless Nitro, fair price, but it will have to be on FAC (BPE is variable) and probably range use only (here in UK)

I always take a camera when at auctions etc. but the new smartphones take quite a good pic - I am sure you would find appreciative viewers here!

Good luck

I saw a cased pair of Westley Richards shotguns for sale late one Saturday morning just before the gunshop closed. I did a lot of hard thinking on the weekend and went back to the shop as soon as they opened Monday morning. Just as I was leaving, guns in hand, another guy came in with cash literally dripping from his pockets, saying "You didn't just buy them did you?"

He who hesitates is lost.

Talking to a well-known local gun collector, he told me once about two guys who were at a gun show next to a quality English 10 gauge (3" chambered) double shotgun, trying to beat down the vendor's price, which was a fair one, by quibbling about nonsense. He asked, "how much?", was told the price, reached right over and put his arm out past both of these guys, grabbed the gun and said "sold".

As I said, he who hesitates is lost.

Now, having smuggly said all that, one of the nicest guns I NEVER bought was a .577 NE 2,3/4" double, made by Lancaster, beautiful bore and selling for what seems like a pretty reasonable price now. I wasn't sure then if a 2,3/4" shell was big enough! I'm not quite sure now what I was intending to hunt with it, but it must have been pretty big.
