Rechambering M03 barrels???
      #235485 - 11/09/13 04:34 PM

Don't know if this is a silly question or not. Never been afraid to ask a silly question as asking is the only way to learn what you do not know.

Can Mauser M03 barrels be rechambered if required? Is the 'mechanism' for locking the exchangeable barrels a hindrance in any way?

The reason I ask. I always wanted a "world hunting rifle" with exchangeable barrels in 6.5x68, 8x68S and .404 (or a x68mm custom cartridge but the .404 will do).

The Mauser M03 was not available in 6.5x68 but used to be available in 6.5x65 RWS. So I compromised and purchased a barrel in that cartridge chambering. I understand that now Mauser does not even offer the 6.5x65 RWS anymore. But probably does offer a 6.5x57 or similar. When my barrels arrived what was delivered was not to order and had variations. For example the 6.5x65 RWS barrel was only 600 mm, not 650 mm as ordered.

Now I DO realise there is aboslutely no purpose to modifying tghe existing x65 mm barrel to x68 mm as the barrel would be too short to be worth it. And the twist rate would be wrong as well.

But IF a 6.5mm barrel of 650 mm could be obtained with a reasonable twist rate, could it be rechambered by a competent gunsmith? Any complications that could be forseen?

I have additional questions re M03 barrels, but will ask after any replies to the above question. Thanks.

Hello NitroX
I have sold tis rifles here in Iceland and many in 6,5 x 65 and it is a very good caliber, I also have sell Sauers in 6,5 x 68 there is not so very much diffrens on this two caliber, I think it is no so good idea to re chambering this barrels because the locking lugs are in the barrel and the rear part of the barrel is harderned .

I suspect that is the case. Why I was asking are there complications with these barrels, especially as you say the locking lugs are in the barrel where they need to be on a good takedown.

I also have another barrel which was for another question but dependent on the first question's answers.

I spoke to Mauser directly about custom chamberings and their answer was they do not do them. I believe I know of a couple of owners who do have custom chamberings for their rifles however.

At a separate occasion at a SHOT Show here in Australia I had the Mauser rep (from Germany) lie about certain chamberings being available.

I asked him about the 6.5x68, he replied it was not available but the 6.5x65 RWS was instead. Because I knew this cartridge had also been discontinued and when I confronted him with this, he was lost for a reply ... not a good sales technique to lie to customers. JMO.
