Zimbabwe concessions

Hi,

I am planning a buffalo hunt in Zim next year and would really appreciate some input on hunters experience with the various concession areas.

I am considering the Charissa, Gokwe areas, as well as dande South or Cherowe.

I am not sold on Matetsi, as I have heard so many conflicting reports of dodgy operations up there.

Any comment about companies to hunt with would also be great, but not essential. That homework is well underway!

I hope some of you can help.

I've hunted Sengwa Research and Chete. Both were fantastic hunting but by no means easy. We only hunt dugga boys which I think makes it much more difficult.

I saw more evidence of poachers in Sengwa, but otherwise they were comparable if you ask me, except of course for the beauty of the lake, which puts Chete over the top (but not by much).

I'm planning my next hunt for Mozambique primarily because I've never been there, but otherwise if I could I'd leave tonight to go back to Chete.

Good Luck!

Curious who you are hunting with there...my first trip to Africa was in some of those areas..the PH I was with on the first hunt was horrible and imho, should not be allowed to guide..

totally misrepresented the hunt..found out we were hunting on land we didnt have permission to hunt, broken down equipement--we had to push the jeeps in the morning to get them to start for the entire 21 days I was there..not a good trip..

on the flip side I have had nothing but good experiences since then...so it all evens out..

Charisa is good country , quite easy sand county. Gokwe is communal land. I would not hunt Buff there and you will see little else in the way of game as with most communal lands would have been poached out.
Chewore is lovely hunting country but the buff are getting hit hard by hunters and Lion, but no harder than most Zim areas.
Dande is good. Also has been hunted hard a few years ago BUT it has a stronger populating of Buffalo in general, thus it can absorb the off take better.

My best hunts have been with Richard Cooke, first in Chete in 2008 and then in Sengwa in 2012. Outstanding service and attention to detail.

Ironic - thats my story as well. South Africa in 2006 was supposed to be a dream come true but instead it was a nightmare I couldn't wake from.

Just like you since then I have learned a few things, and hunting with Rich everything has gone well.

Thanks guys, I am getting some reinforcement of things I have suspected.

All the input surely helps and will assist on narrowing down the PH/ company.
It's all about the experience!

I can go to RSA and shoot a big buff on a postage stamp next to the Kruger in 3 days.............cheaper than a hunt in Zim by a long way.......... But I want to HUNT a buff, and enjoy the fires and the bush.

So I guess it's narrowing down!

Getting excited and its a year away!!

Guess I should be focussing more on finding my .450NE in the meantime!

Nice problems!

Each type of hunt in each country has their place...but I certainly agree with you...very few things in life that are as fun as chasing buff in the bush...

Why doesnt that sound quite correct??

Sitting in the airport now just returned from a zim buffalo hunt with Richard Cooke. If you truly want to hunt your buff in the thick stuff this is outstanding.
