Fishing in the limpopo
      #2351 - 10/04/03 07:09 PM

HI all,

Just got back from a short trip up to Ellisras we spent Saturday and Sunday next to the limpopo fishing but the fishing wasn't that great but at least we had a good time

Here are some pics

Girrafe on tha way to the farm

My brother with a barbel of around 4#

Charmaine my wife with a "Klipbarber" directly translated "Stone barbel" a real nuisance don't get bigger than 25cm or so.

We had some bushbuck across the river on Botswana's side as well all in all 2 ewe 1 ram and a small one.

Frederick,
Excellent pics.
Is the Barbel also known as the 'Vundu' in Zimbabwe?
The reason I ask, is that whilst fishing with a mate on the Zambezi, he hauled in a 'Vundu' that went off the weighing scales which had a 50lbs limit.
I will post the pics when I sort my system out.
Mpofu.

Mpofu,

No the vundu is not the same as a barbel altough it could be in the same family. The barbel can also get very large in size depending on it's environment and can weight up the 100 lbs but on a normal scale I would quess that anything that goes over 40 lbs is very big.

SF that barbel looks very much a bottom feeder with the barbels on its chin--do you eat them?" it looks like a [censored] eating catfish that are not highly regarded here.

I see your rod holders are from your campfire equipment---an easy adaptation,i made up much the same for myself too.

Gryphon,
Yes it is catfish and if prepared the right way it is very tasty. You get a similar catfish specie in the Lake Kariba and surrounding rivers wich is called a Vundu but they get a hell of a lot bigger. They go up to 50-60kg easy.
In South Africa we even make "biltong" from the catfish wich we call "bokkoms". Very salty and I'll leave the taste of it for your imagination.
