Wild dog scalps doubled

EXCLUSIVE: THE number of wild dog pelts handed in to the Victorian Government has almost doubled since January.

In January the bounty increased from $50 to $100. Since, the number of fox scalps has also jumped by almost 50,000 since April to 200,064.

At the start of the year, 430 wild dog pelts had been handed in, but the latest figures reveal 793 wild dogs pelts have now been received.

Agriculture Minister Peter Walsh said he was "very happy" with the figures.

"I think it proves that the increase in bounty that we did from $50 to $100 has given that added incentive for people going to hunt them," Mr Walsh said.

Ballarat and Bendigo remain the areas where most fox scalps have been handed in, with 27,317 and 29,652 scalps respectively.

Bairnsdale has received the largest number of wild-dog pelts, with 360.

Broadford teenager Alicia Kutz is one of thousands of hunters cashing in on the bounty since its inception in October 2011.

She has presented 1165 fox scalps for a reward of $11,650

The 16-year-old is saving the bounty money to buy her first car.

Alicia said she and her father would often go spotlighting several nights a week.

"I started at age 10 just holding the spotlight and opening the gates and then I started actually shooting at age 12 and have done it ever since," she said.

"I've got 344 (scalps) this year and Dad and I together ... 636."

Guess she is only getting $10 bucks for hers...something wrong with their accounting, if min bounty is $50 and max is now $100.

She has presented 1165 fox scalps for a reward of $11,650

"the increase in bounty that we did from $50 to $100 has given that added incentive for people going to hunt them"

anyway still a nice earner!

Yeah - at $100.00 they owe her $104,850.00 over the $11,650.00 noted.

Must be a misprint! $10.00 seems right for a fox bounty. $100.00 seems outrageously high.

Can't be true, a gov't Minister would never get his numbers wrong ....

Actually you are all right. $10 for foxes, $100 for wild dogs, ie mixed blood dingoes.

Looked it up:

Victorian Fox and Wild Dog Bounty Terms and Conditions
1. Background

Foxes and wild dogs are established pest animals in Victoria and are beyond eradication, meaning they require ongoing management by all public and private land owners.

Effective fox and wild dog management requires an integrated approach utilising all available management practices including poison baiting, trapping, exclusion fencing, fumigation and appropriate animal husbandry. Hunting can play an important role in supporting an integrated management approach.

To reward eligible Victorian hunters for their efforts in contributing to fox and wild dog control the Victorian Government has announced a $4 million Fox and Wild Dog Bounty commencing from 1 October 2011.

This initiative will deliver on the Government’s commitment to reinstate a fox and wild dog bounty and reward eligible Victorian hunters with a $10 bounty reward for each fox killed and $100 for each wild dog killed, subject to the terms and conditions in this document.

The most effective means of achieving a sustained reduction in fox and wild dog numbers is through simultaneous and coordinated community baiting programs, implemented at a landscape scale and supported by other control techniques.

Existing fox and wild dog control programs being conducted on public land will continue during the bounty period.

Dingoes often occur in areas inhabited by wild dogs, appear morphologically similar to wild dogs and are extremely difficult to differentiate from wild dogs. This means that wild dog control programs have the potential to directly impact on Dingoes.
In Victoria, the Dingo (Canis lupus dingo) has been listed as ‘Threatened’ under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 and is protected on most areas of public land under the Wildlife Act 1975.
Dingoes have been declared as unprotected on all private land in Victoria, as well as in the shaded areas (and according to the description provided) on public land shown in Figure 2 below (except when in captivity).

Figure 2: Areas where the Dingo is unprotected on public land within 3 kilometres of any private land boundary, including land subject to a perpetual lease.

There is a continued push for a bounty to be implemented in other states including NSW and SA, where fox numbers in some parts have reached plague proportions.

From the Field and Game website.

As we in SA and NSW should bloody well have to. Use hunters to decrease fox numbers.

G'Day Fella's,

Well done young lady!
We need more of you out there participating and showing us blokes, How To Do It!!!

And the reason that Foxes are in plague numbers is?
Well years ago now, the Fruit Loopy Animal Libbers and their Slimey Green mates were throwing Red Paint, on women wearing natural Fur Coats in public!
So Women stopped wearing Fur Coats and the price of skins went thru the basement over night!!!

And that's why we stopped deliberately shooting Foxes!

So with no contingency plan in place by to powers to be, foxes (etc) start breeding up and eating there way thru huge numbers of native wildlife all over Australia (and the rest of the world)!
So these Fruit Loopy Animal Libbers and their Green Slime mates, should be held responsible for the demise of huge numbers of already rare and endangered native species!!!

And all because of some of these "Fruities", didn't like the idea of other people wearing natural Fur Coats! We should be making these Fruities pick up the bill for the Bounty!!!

Doh!

Good on her. The shooting sports need more of this sort of advertising.

I grew up in the top left shaded area of that map, plenty of foxes but never saw or even heard of dingoes being around, the occasional dog trouble mauling sheep but that was usually close to town from roaming dogs, not what I would call wild dogs.
