458 Lott rechamber
      #23281 - 03/01/05 05:41 PM

I'm thinking of doing this conversion to my model 70, and just wondering if it's really worth the trouble and expense? I just started loading for the 458 and think maybe I can boost factory levels a little, opinions.

its definately worth it. Its an extremely easy rechamber and you can still use plainold 458's. You can push the old 458 up from the old factory loads, but never up to the lotts capability.

As was just said, it is a very easy conversion. I just had a .458 Win mag Model 70 done and I think it cost me something in the $80 dollar range. Prices in your area may vary. Nowadays one can get 2150 fps. from a .458 WM with a 500 gr. bullet with careful reloading. However, you can get 2250 fps. from the Lott without breaking a sweat.

It is not difficult to achieve 2100 plus with 500 grainers in 458 Win but if you want more velocity the Lott is the answer.
Bear in mind that if big velocity in 45 cal is all you need for spectacular kills, everyone would be using the 460 Wby.
I just bought my third 458 Win, a Whitworth Express and even though it could very easily be converted to 458 Lott I have no intention of doing so.

Nframe, what I find nice about the 458LOTT is one can easily attain the magic 2150-2250fps range, even 2330fps by pushing it, of speed for the 500 gr .458 bullet without raising pressures too high. The 458 Win Mag is a fine old cartridge, and as others have said it can, with tooday's powders, be loaded up to 2150 easily with a 500 gr bullet. As long as the ammo is fresh there will be no problems with it. Unfortunetly, once the ammo bounces around some, and time passes, the powder is sometimes turned into a solid from the crushing load. Add to that the heat often associeated with late season hunting in Africa, problems can arrise. With the LOTT's roomier case, the 500 gr bullet can reach the proper speeds without the attending pressure, and compaction problems. The 458 Win Mag can handle the 500 gr bullet, but not as effeciently as the LOTT. IMO, the LOTT is what winchester should have done in the first place, since they had the 375 H&H length action, anyway, it simply makes more sense!

I have an unfired Ruger No1H 458 win Mag as we speak. It is scheduled for a LOTT surgery, soon. Another good thing is if your ammo is lost, in transit, 458 Win Mag can be used in the LOTT chamber, and it is always available in Africa. I believe it is a worthwhile persuit, the one I'm about to build will be my third, with the other two in FN Mausers actions.

It all really depends on what you think you NEED.
If you think you NEED MORE than 2100 fps with a 45 cal 500 grain bullet then you will NEED the Lott.

Nframe

I'd shoot the hell out the 458 Win first and see if you can stand the recoil. The way to make it shine is with a 450 soft or solid with Re 7. I own both a 458 Win and Lott and yes the Lott gives greater velocity but at increased recoil where I can stand only about 20 rounds at a whack. With the 458 Win, I can shoot around 60 rounds before fatigue sets in.

I have to admit to being astonished that this is supposed to be a "good thing" where African hunting is concerned.

The majority of hunters doing the conversion to the Lott chambering for use on big game in Africa will most likely be doing it on a bolt action rifle.
So, someone takes a 458 Lott bolt action rifle to Africa to hunt dangerous game, their ammo gets lost and they opt to use factory 458 Win ammo.
Bolt action rifles to be used on DG MUST have their magazine/action rails/follower/spring/feed ramp regulated to feed their cartridges perfectly.
Their 458 Lott magazine is now WAY too long for the 458 Win ammo!
Their 458 Lott rifle is (should be) set up to feed cartridges which are WAY longer than the 458 Win they now intend to use!
Their 458 Win cartridges have heaps of room to move wherever they want in the mag during recoil!
This is exactly what you DON'T WANT in a DG rifle!
There is a real good chance that the shorter Win 458's will not feed properly in a mag that has been set up to feed the much longer Lott cartridge!
Instead of a dangerous game rifle you could really have a DANGEROUS RIFLE!

458 Win in 458 Lott chambers?
An option yes, but IMO maybe not a smart one where dangerous game is concerned!

4seventy, you are most likely right, as usual, We will say you are anyway!

I can only go by the three Lott rifles I've owned and hunted with. None of them had any problem feeding 458 WIN MAG rounds, into LOTT chambers. Of course all mine have been CRF rifles, which have the cartridge in it's grip as soon as it pops free of the magazine, and is held in line with the chamber. The part of the case that rides the loading rails, on a 458 WM, is exactly the same as that part of the LOTT, and the fact that it is a little shorter, causes less downward pressure for the bullet weight being closer to the bold face on the 458WM, than on the LOTT.

The cartridges are only slightly different in length, just enough to avoid compacting the powder, with the 458LOTT being 3.60" OAL, and the 458 Win Mag being 3.30" OAL. 3 tenths of an inch isn't a big deal.

I'd hardly call that a "HUGE" difference, in a CRF rifle! In a Mod 70, or FN Mauser there is no problem in working 458 Win Mag ammo in a 458 LOTT rifle, in my experience. The only draw back I find with useing 458 WM in LOTT rifle is haveing to put up with 458 WM factory ammo, and the possibility of burning a ring it the chamber!

If you are driveing 400, or 500 miles to hunt, I can see you not wanting to use the 458 WM ammo in a LOTT, but I fail to see how one could loose his ammo driveing. However, when one spends $2500 US for airfare, another $1500 for a charter, and 15,000 US on a hunt, the fact that the ammo will work is a boone,IMO, if the re-routeing demons ship your LOTT ammo to Anchorage airport in stead of MAUN Botswana! What-ch thank!

Mac,
Most likely some rifles would still feed ok.
However that three tenths of an inch is 300 thou!
By changing from 458 Lott to 458 Win you are doing a similar thing to altering your bullet seating depth by almost 5/16 of an inch!
Actually the length difference between 458 Win and 458 Lott is basicly the same as the length difference between 30-06 and 375 H&H! A bit more than "slight" IMO!

Mine have been crf too, two 98's and a 602 Brno.
Crf really only accurately "controlls" the rear end of the case.
Getting the loaded round into the chamber is still influenced by feed ramp, rails, and follower and spring etc IMO.

Mac,
I am not trying to be "right".
Just giving an opinion.

Sorry, but I thought we were talking about using 458's in Africa.
Bit hard for either of us to drive there don't you reckon?

So you have found this to be true while hunting big game in Africa?
Did your 458 Lott ammo go missing?

You know, 4seventy, you are a cheeky fellow!

Though you already know thw answer to your question, here it is!

NO! My ammo did not go missing, but if it had, I knew if the 458 WIN MAG ammo would work in my rifle. I think it is a little lax on the part of a client hunter who is traveling by airplane to a hunt, to not know what will, and will not work in his rifle, before he leaves! I DO!

The other thing you questioned about traveling to Africa by car! I think you know what was meant by my post in that regard. You had made comment about driveing 12 hours to your hunts for the water boys up north, and not looseing your ammo. It is somewhat different for the guy that changes planes tree or four times, in three or four different countries, on a trip from a little ranch comunity, in Texas to a camp on the Luangwa River in Zambia. If his ammo is lost, he is in real trouble, if it isn't something that can be picked up redily in Mfuwe, Zambia, a mud village with "ONE" general store, that will have only 375 H&H, 30-06, and 458 Win Mag ammo, if they have any at all, it will most likely be 375 H&H, and 458 WM.

It makes little difference whether one agrees or not, but the fact is, in my experience, there is no problem with the feeding of factory 458 WM ammo, in a Lott chambered rifle, if it feeds the LOTT properly.

I any event, the next time I drive to Africa, I'll make sure not to have my ammo go missing
