A Boss & Co. Bolt Action in .275
      #232380 - 12/07/13 02:24 PM

Given the recent interest in bolt actions by Boss, I thought I'd share a few pictures with you. I briefly owned a .275 Boss bolt action. My favorite trait of this rifle was actually in its "un-Boss-like" style. It sort of flew in the face of "Best Guns Only". Yet, that was precisely what I most admired about it. It had this subtleness and understated refinement about it. There was no show in this rifle; just clean lines. Sometimes beauty is found in simplicity. I always thought that a worthy task to achieve as a gunmaker. I shot it, cared for it, took many photos, measurements and tracings, we learned from each other, then I passed it on to someone who wanted it worse than me.

...and the results at 150 yards!

Indeed, lines are very clean.

Is there any explanation for the altered bolt handle in a rifle which shows no sign of ever having been fitted with a scope?

Lovely rifle.

The barrel contour looks likes to be identical to a model A or B Mauser, rather than on a Rigby
rifle(even though they were all made in Oberndorf)
Thanks for sharing.

xausa,
I never could explain the bolt handle. It was otherwise not set up for the mounting of a telescopic sight.

rigbymauser,
I did take measurements of the barrel profile, and agree with you.

Just love those old rifles!
Have you any targets at 40 and 80 meters?

Thanks! That dot was about 4" as best as I can remember. It was certainly one of my better performances. I've been very fortunate that I've always been able to reload and go shoot often since I was very young. I don't recall having saved targets or pictures there of at 40 and 80 meters. With my eyes, I still have to tell myself to bury the front sight on most vintage guns with open sights. No doubt that's the reason for the high group at 150 yards.

I had a .303Rigby that shot about 1 foot high at 100 meter, with 174grain bullets doing 2300 ft/sec.
when I loaded the traditional 215grain it came down. Actually on my first load session they printed dead-on. Velocity was just barely 2100 ft/sec. The original .303 in black powder did about 1900 ft/sec, where the smokeless version improved another 200 ft/sec only.
With that kind of ballistics, would hardly today be considered adequate for any serious hunting but rather just an amusement for re-enactors and gunbuffs..

:):) So little the so called experts know.
A "tough" bullet of about .370bc at 2150fps...........sounds about perfect.

I am firmly in the Darkside with you RigbyMauser. Have been a WBY user for 30+ years. My recent failing eye sight is calling for optics and a pair of little Mark V's have stepped up to help.

That said, they are NOT and will never be a slim, svelte, well rounded Edwardian produced Bolt rifle. I will take a Rigby or preferably a Fraser (or surely this BOSS) bolt rifle every chance........shamefully practically requires optics for my hunting

I testify before the NitroExpress Vintage Gun Court...I have 1 Weatherby in .240cal
When this said I begin to reconize "Weatherby" as an interesting genuine American Gunhistory worth telling. The Weatherby like you write will never become the slick trim/slim stalkingrifle of the past.
A 215grain @ 2150 ft/sec from a .303 will drop any roebuck here in this kingdom and beyond with given distance ofcouse. I will also at any chance when hunting roebuck use my Kurz 6,5x54kP or a Rigby Ball & Shot too. A .38 special is all it takes. The roebuck isn´t a tough animal like a wild boar. But for hunting in Africa for longe range springbok, wilderbeast or any other larger antilope the .303 comes with a limitation where my .270Wea(pre-winnie) have never heard of "limitation" yet.
I have shot quite a few animals with the .270wea and I have seen how fast animals drop versus a slower moving bullet.
Use the Boss as long as you eyes can use the ironsights. I too enjoy ironsights, which mainly is on my .333Jeffery when hunting in Africa.

The Weatherby cartridges are fine. It's the rifles that are ugly. A .240 Weatherby built along the lines of a classic sporting rifle would a great antelope/deer rifle.
