In the general scheme of things where does a Parker Hale, with modified military stock and a short mag. fit? Never having handled a Speed / PH, I would suspect the main difference would be the PH is converted military rifle vs a commercial LE action / barreled action?
Thankyou you for any comments. --- John

Hello John, all the Parker Hale Lee Enfield's I have seen were #4s,(this is not to say they all were, just what I have seen) they removed the charger bridge and rear sight mounts, replaced the sights with barrel mounted models and restocked them, they also removed the bayonet lugs or rebarreled them, the magazine size was probably optional.
The Lee Speeds are all LEC or MLE actions although there may have been a few SMLE actions used in the final days of manufacture. While they're all Enfield's, mechanically they are very different.

I don't have the rifle in my hands yet, maybe the end of next week.
from the photos I do have it is a #1 Mk3, order top to bottom the following - Crown,
G,R., BSA Co., 1928, Sht. LE, one I can't make out.
How the gentleman came up with Parker Hale I don't know. Anyway a decent looking gun
can't wait until it gets here. --- John

PArker Hale sporterised LE rifles both np.4 rifles and no.1's right up to the 1970's. The cheap models will just be military stocks and a Parker Hale barrel and a front bead sight. The 'flash' ones had sporting Monte Carlo style stocks.
Your guy probably got the Parker Hale from the stamp on the barrel, it will have been rebarreled with a good barrel when they sportered it.
The Parker Hale sporterised Lee Enfields are all post World War Two.

Well I finally got the gun and for the money I would say it's not a bad deal.
I've seen worse barrels, so I'll shoot it first, if ok I will leave things alone.
I have a like new barrel in the parts bin and I'm tempted to have it installed.
No "Parker Hale" name on it any where I can see but that may not mean anything.
Anyway thank you for all your comments. --- John

Re "I've seen worse barrels, so I'll shoot it first,"

I've seen some pretty ordinary 303 and other barrels shoot really well, including some Lee Speed's.

So luck may be with you.

Just wondering, I like the rifle in general as it's almost petite in the hands.

The large rear sight, although I don't mind military sights, seems a bit out
of place. Has anyone "pared" these sights down to make them more appropriate,
eg. modify to look like an "island" and perhaps "thin" the ladder?

Some sort of express sight would be the thing but "in these here parts" they are
quite scarce. So an alternative would be nice, with some pics. to boot. --- John
