Modern Mauser Mayhem
      #231046 - 10/06/13 07:49 PM

It has been a couple of months since I have been hunting as I have been busy with my work and I just bought another house.

Booked in with FATBOY to come out on the June long weekend for a pig chase.
We left for one of Neale's hunting places where he gets his big numbers at 5 am yesterday morning.
At 6am we got pulled over by the cops and put on the breathalyzer and had our drivers licences checked as well as the serial numbers checked on our rifles.

Unloaded the bikes and started the day.
I bought a 4 wheeler from Neale's Mum and this was my first lap on it.
I did hit an ants nest at speed.

We were hunting with "Two modern mausers", I was using my CZ 9.3x62 topped with a VX2 3-9 with a German 4 retical and shooting Highland factory ammo.
Neale was using his Ruger African topped with a 2.5-8 VX3 in 9.3x62 shooting 286 grain RN Woodleigh's.

With some good numbers of pigs about we got 75 pigs for the morning and ended up with some hot barrels.
Duke caught 11 and we shot the rest.

A pretty flash sow's nest.

At one point Neale sent me into a little patch of pine that was only as big as two house blocks .My jaw dropped when 40 or 50 pigs erupted out of it.
That triggered chaos. I shot a nice boar of about 65 kg then caught up with Neale to go to work on the mob.
He ran out of ammo and came roaring across to me and grabbed a handful of ammo out of my belt and we kept going.

Here are a couple of the pigs I shot.

Finally got to use my sword (seeing as I'm the one who got FATBOY onto them)
One of the ones out of a big mob showing the benefits of the 9.3x62.

A couple of FATBOY's.

A recovered 286 grain RN from a set of "Dubs".

Unfortunately with rain on the way Neale has had to work so we are only going out the once but we are going to work out some loads for my new 9.5x57 today.
It is a Brno, VZ-24 with a 4 power Conquest on top.

I agree Lancaster, working up some loads with Neale (Fatboy) we tried 42, 43 then 44 grains of ADI 2206H without pressure signs, will work towards 45g next. The 44gr load gave 2050fps average with the 270gr Rn Woodleigh so still have room to move. This gave a sub 1 inch group so am very excited and looking forward to seeing what the 9.5x57 can achieve.

Like it and good to see Neale too.

I like all the 9.3's and the 9.5.

We will have to call you "Maximus Piggus" after displaying that Gladius pig sticking sword.

Good writeup. I expect that 9.5x57 has a way to go yet, in loads.

My 9.3x57, with less case capacity (smaller shoulder dia.) and very light moderate pressure signs runs 2,300fps with 270's and 2,200fps with 286gr. - using both BLC2 and H4895. Varget will do likewise, but is slower than 4895 in this case. The BLC2 is the slowest of them all.

Thanks, I am very happy to have come onto it. It is an older stock so I don't think those pretty pieces are so easy to come across these days

Yes I have both 9.3 & 9.5 and love them both (my 338's are getting lonely) haha

Maximus Piggus- I like it
I must say though that I can see why the Romans used the Gladius it is very efficient. By that I mean effortless, the long taperd point then the width leave no doubt as to the quickness of dispatching the animal. It may sound strange but the quickness makes it remarkably humane IMO. I am sure others would disagree of course

Thanks Daryl, yes I agree, when we did the test firing I was amazed at how "blown" out the shoulders were, till the fire forming they were shallow. it almost looks Ackley Imp, so yes I think there is plenty left in the "old girl"

I will keep you posted as it progresses.

That would be great - according to COTW, like the 9.3x62 - it has literally, an improved-type case shape.

Specs. being .471" base, and .460" shoulder - that's only .0055" taper per side.

The standard Ackley IMP case has a .454" shoulder and .469" base for .0075" taper per side.

When developing loads, I find the Improved cases difficult to 'read' as the pressure climbs, so I only use my little finger for extraction. Still, even with that, I usually find myself backing off before any of them have ever become sticky, just because I figure this case shouldn't be putting out these velocities with these bullet weights. The improved cases can be puzzling - but are amazing.

Here is an 8x57 case necked up to 9.5 (.375") on the left and a fired case on the right.

I'm only looking for about 2150 fps with the 270 grain RN and 45 grains of 2206H should do that for me.They will be "the ducks guts" on big pigs.

Neale runs 250 grain RN in his 9.3x57 at 2200 fps and it works a treat.

Maybe there is a reason the old traditional way to dispatch a stag in Central European type countries was with a long stag antlered short sword. I forget the name the Germans gave the short sword.

Thanks for that picture, Viking338 - shows what I was saying exactly! You've got it set up for a good stiff crush-fit on chambering, too - excellent.
Just wondering if the 270gr. you've picked is soft enough to expand well for that low speed.

You may be right Daryl but there is only one way to find out.

Ok , I loaded 45 grains of 2206H under the 270 grain RN and only got 2080 fps.
I then loaded 46 grains but there wasn't enough light for the chrony so not sure on velocity.

Still a ways from max as you can see in the photo.
Front row of 3 are the 45 grains.
Back row of 3 are 46 grains.
Extraction was fine.
Hope to get time on the weekend to do a bit more with it.
