Have any of the collectors here ever encountered the Mauser "special range rifle" or an original factory engraved and embellished Mauser sporting rifle? In years of scouring auction catalogues and every other source I can think of, I have never turned one up. The image in Speed's book of the range rifle is the only actual photograph of one of these rifles I have seen. They were apparently offered in all standard Mauser calibres, but it seems only the .30-06 is a good bet to actually exist.
I suppose these must be the holy grail of original Oberndorf sporting rifles...
If anyone has a photo, would love to see it. If anyone has a story, would love to hear it.
Thanks Gryphon, I hadn't seen that picture. It's a handsome arm for sure.
I've read somewhere that a number of these rifles languished on the shelves at A&F in New York around the start of the great depression. However, if they were first offered in 1925 you'd think a few would have been snapped up during the end of the roaring twenties. The prices as I understand it were around USD 250, about as much as a G&H custom rifle of the period.
